Gandhi Ready To Step Aside In India Independence Move
Mohandas K. Gandhi said the release of eight imprisoned Congress Working Committee members prompted him to step aside as leader and let others continue independence plans. Field Marshal Wavell announced the liberations and an Indian British conference is set for June 25 at Simla to discuss two extra Indian executive posts. Gandhi telegraphed the viceroy that he is an advisor, not a recognized Congress representative. The inclusion of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad in Simla’s guest list was omitted.
