General Eisenhower home from Europe speaks before Congress and praises Allied unity and sacrifice. He urges leaders to preserve the peace won, credits American soldiers and Allies, and emphasizes faith, determination, and continued support for President Truman and postwar unity.
Allied forces continue push in Okinawa and Philippines as Japanese units collapse and surrender in large numbers. U S 37th Division advances in the Cagayan Valley while B-29s strike Kagoshima Omuta Hamematsu and Yokkaichi on Kyushu and Honshu causing major fires. observers warn the war will speed up with powerful firepower and warned Japanese resistance remains fierce.
The U S Supreme Court ruled 5 to 3 to cancel an order for the deportation of Harry Bridges, West Coast labor leader and CIO head, to Australia. The decision ends hearings that began in 1938 after Attorney General Biddle ordered Bridges deported as an undesirable alien and Communist.
The report notes fair skies in Amarillo and vicinity with warmer temperatures today and Tuesday. It lists little temperature change tonight, with highs reaching 90 to 95. The 24 hour readings show a high of 76, low of 50, and noon at 68.
A man and a woman were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Bill Lamb at a Lubbock filling station. Investigators traced a car used in the crime, followed a long manhunt across arid pastures, and connected the suspects to a previous robbery at a Phillips 66 station near Brownfield. Lamb, 50, died from a spine wound after a struggle that also involved head blows.
Alton M. Reeder Jr., 9, grandson of Judge C. B. Reeder, died at 6 55 this morning at St. Anthony's Hospital after being struck on the head while hunting a fox with a .22 on his father’s farm 12 miles south of Amarillo. Witnesses include playmate Bill Clifford and Dr. A E Winsett. Survived by parents, paternal and maternal grandparents, a sister Ann and Houston grandparents. Body at Blackburn Shaw Chapel.
The White House said President Truman expects the San Francisco United Nations conference to adjourn Saturday and that he will attend the closing session that afternoon. He plans a brief Olympia vacation before flying to San Francisco for the final day and later faces an uncertain trip to Mackinac Island for a governors conference.
Amarillo Grain Exchange reports eight loads of 1945 wheat received today from Canadian and Happy, a shipment from Kress, and another from Tulsa. Protein content averages between 11 and 15 percent.

A Mercy Flight from Lubbock Army Air Field will carry 16 year old Joan Prouty for treatment of poliomyelitis at the Kenny Institute in Minneapolis. Col. Howell Estes Jr. says the 900 mile nonstop flight will take about six hours with her parents and an Army doctor and nurse aboard. Joan is granddaughter of Judge R E Underwood and Mrs Underwood of 2800 Hughes. Parker Prouty is general manager of the Lubbock Avalanche Journal and formerly worked in advertising at The Amarillo Globe-News.
Potter County reports that 42300 in Series E War Bonds added to Amarillo totals bring city purchases to 1534707 with a 2300000 July 6 quota. Amarillo Life Underwriters begin selling bonds and a Bond Premier at Paramount Theater June 28 requires a bond purchase. The Victory Ship Amarillo is hoped to be funded for Wilmington July 1 launch at a cost 2500000.
The United States Weather Bureau reports no rainfall expected, easing harvest concerns. Temperatures this afternoon will reach the low 80s, aiding ripening as farmers await golden wheat.
British headquarters reported two Syrians killed and four wounded at Aleppo on June 16 after French troops fired on civilians attempting to storm their barracks. British troops disarmed the French soldiers and evacuated them from the barracks with no further incident.
A mixed Soviet Finnish boundary committee met in Helsinki to draw the Petsamo boundary in Northern Finland. Petsamo was ceded to Finland by Russia in 1920 and is to be returned to Russia under the Russo Finnish armistice terms.
