The state supreme court in Lamar Colorado ruled that three bank bandits Howard L. Royston George J. Abshire and Ralph E. Fleagle must hang for murder. Also note today’s report on the Shipstead bill and a fatal cafe holdup incident in Oklahoma City leaving four suspects in custody and news of Captain Lewis Yancey missing.
Burglars hit two sites in one night at Star Lumber Co and Goodyear Tire rubber warehouse on Jackson and Johnson streets. Thieves tried to smash the Goodyear safe with a hammer failing to open it. Only about 10 to 15 dollars taken. mud prints show entry after rain. No tires stolen and no lumber loss reported. window entry with cut screen noted.
Chicago reports a tenth victim in a wave of gangland killings as Aloysius Kearney known as Al Karney is shot on the west side while walking home. Police link the violence to the garage racket and question Sam Maltz after finding receipts in Kearney's pockets.
Official circles in Bucharest forecast an early reconciliation between King Carol II and Princess Helen after Carol returned their son Michael to Helen. They noted that the country’s interests and the child’s need for two parents in one home would push Carol and Helen to align their views.
Dr J A Pfeiffer of the University of Maryland Medical School reports the discovery of a new micrococcus named coryza as the cause of colds and states a vaccine can cure a cold and immunize for one to three years after seven years of research and tests on animals and humans.
The Chinese steamer Litung with about 100 aboard sank after striking a rock near Tungchow at the mouth of the Yangtse. The vessel was navigating between Tsungming Island and Tangchow, with uncertainty about any foreign passengers aboard. The north channel, where it sank, is usually avoided by ocean ships.
Captain Lewis Yancey, American goodwill flyer, remains missing after leaving France Field for Tulara. A report from Santa Elena Station in Ecuador said a red plane flew over at about 3 p.m. Sunday. The National Telegraph Company sought to trace Yancey, with Zeh Bouck and Fimit Burgin aboard.
A Washington survey by a women's prohibition reform group reports 21 senators favor the dry laws, eight oppose, and 23 are non committal. Fourteen senators would not answer or define their views clearly. The group calls it a sad commentary on representative government after ten years of national prohibition.
Potter County commissioners were to open bids at 2 PM for an automobile showroom and painting of Tri State Fair grounds buildings. They set aside 22 500 dollars for the exhibit building, with excess over that to be covered by local auto dealers. Plans for a new courthouse were not ready until June 17, with an estimated cost not to exceed 400 000 dollars. The meeting adjourned at 10 this morning to reconvene at 2.
Dublin reports Captain Charles Kingsford Smith postponed the Southern Cross Atlantic flight scheduled for tomorrow morning after weather forecasts showed unfavorable conditions. The Associated Press notes the delay affects the planned transoceanic attempt.
Bulletins in Chinatown announce Hip Sing and On Leong leaders signed a Kel logg Peace Pact ending a ten day Tong war. In Minneapolis five bullet wounds proved fatal for Woo Sam, 56, who identified rival On Leong tong members.
Funeral services are planned in Houston for George Alfred Mill Jr. pioneer oil man railroad builder and ship channel worker who died yesterday. He was the son of James M. Hill a veteran of General Sam Houston in the San Jacinto battle.
Fire at Grandfield Oklahoma destroyed Hayes Bakery Lene Cleaning Shop C W Garner De Goods Rexall Drug Store and two others in a central block. Volunteer and area fire crews arrived after 4 am and found the alarm failed to operate. No injuries reported. Origin undetermined with about 40000 in damages. In Enid Oklahoma one man was overcome by smoke and four downtown businesses burned or damaged including Dugan and Haunstein Beauty Shops and A B Hammer barber shop.
The Federal Radio Commission asked the Commerce Department Radio Division to investigate SOS messages that disrupted four chain broadcasts Saturday night by former Senator James A. Reed of Missouri. Reed said he would wait for facts before seeking an inquiry and questioned whether the SOS call was in good faith.
