Albany July 23 The Associated Press reports Governor Smith faces pressure from advisers to accelerate his presidential campaign with eight weeks to the election He has not decided when where or how often to speak and may limit to one radio addressed per day until after August 19 The plan includes a brief Seagirt New Jersey rally after the acceptance speech and a possible limited campaigning period after August 19
A dwelling at 705 Jefferson Street owned by Grady Camp was slightly damaged by a fire yesterday afternoon. Defective wiring is believed to have caused the blaze. Blackburn Boxwell and Griggs ambulances attended.
Special guards patrolled Harlem after a riot left 2,500 black residents clashing with police. Four patrolmen were slightly injured as the mob dispersed following a confrontation near the Chabis home. Police reported gunfire from nearby buildings though they fired only in the air.
Northwestern Texas reports heavy rainfall with Amarillo at 5.26 inches in 48 hours and Panhandle-wide moisture improving wheat, corn, maize and cotton. Farmers plan to plant wheat this fall, land may be broken, highways drying, and crop prospects brighten across Seagraves, Floyd County, and Slaton areas.
After heavy weekend rains only two inches of water remained in East Tenth Street viaduct, per sewer chief J E Taylor. Debris cleared from drain pipes after prior flood. Twenty Sixth Street viaduct remained flooded with buses detouring yesterday until pumping cleared passage around 10:30 p.m.
W. M. Cates, 51, a prominent Amarillo furniture dealer, was found dead in the second hand department of the Amarillo Furniture Co. at 408 Taylor Street. A coroner's inquest returned a death by self-inflicted wound with a blood-stained knife found beside the body.

Special to The Globe Spearman July 23 combines returned to the fields this morning to resume harvesting golden ripe wheat after an inch of rain Saturday and Saturday night. The rain benefited row crops and delayed harvest about 24 hours. Bank deposits in Spearman reached 1,250,000 in two banks, up 200 percent from a month earlier. One thousand carloads of wheat were shipped out Saturday, bringing season total to 2,000 cars.
In Chicago on July 28, Judge Frank Comerford sentenced four youths to life imprisonment for the killing of Pearl Eggleston a 17 year old usherette during an attempted theater robbery in Berwyn. Durmaj admitted firing the shot as the girl screamed. Thomas Mas and Tulacz pleaded for mercy for Durmaj.
The highway committee of the Board of City Development will meet at 4 o'clock this afternoon. Members include chairman J. R. Gant, Lester Stone, and W. W. Chilton. They will hear Col. Harve H. Haines and A. 8. Stinnett discuss plans for state highway department road surfacing in this territory.
The Weet Texas State Teachers College budget of 1 260 000 for 1929 30 will be presented to the Board of Control at Austin today by Dr J A Hill president and Travis Shaw business manager. Included in the budget are a library museum and arte building to cost 225 000 a science building for the manual training department to cost 30 000 a home demonstration building to cost 110 000.
The Associated Press reports five days before Texas primaries that Governor Moody seeks re election and Louis Wardlaw targets the governor's office. Moody will speak at Fort Worth KFQB radio 8 30 p m while Wardlaw appears in San Antonio 8 p m after Austin remarks. Court rulings bar some anti Moody candidates from ballots in Cameron Val Verde Webb counties and possibly more.
A newly installed safe at Amarillo Sears Roebuck on Third and Buchanan withstood a night attempt by thieves using crowbars and hammers. The lockup contained $1,500 in cash and checks and records. This follows two prior safe robberies in the city within a week, including the San Jacinto Clarence Saunders store and the Silver Grill on East Third Street. Police hint arrests may come soon as investigators consider a possible gang link.
