Chicago July 20 Associated Press Russell Scott’s chance for proof of innocence faded as James M Ball Detroit telegrapher admitted he lied about witnessing the shooting of Joseph Maurer. Ball said the tale was a romance to save an innocent man and that he would surrender. Governor Small had ordered a stay of execution after a telegram from a supposed Robert Scott pardoned by confession, but no action followed. Indianapolis July 20 Albert Edward Wiggam author of The New Decalogue of Science who attacked Bryan during the Scopes trial at Dayton declared Bryan turned tail and ran when Dr Henry Fairfield Osborn sought to prove evolution to the commoner Wiggam said Bryan charges that evolution leads to agnosticism are without facts He added ministers attended the trial who are evolutionists but not agnostic He cited Bryan pledged February 26 to accept proof of evolution if any be submitted and accused Bryan of avoiding proofs to the jury and American people He likened the issue to battles among ants and dogs to show the supposed cruelty of eliminating the unfit
