In Trieste on July 11 police battled 20 000 pro Slovene rioters as American troops in war kit arrived to aid police. Rioters attacked markets while Italian crowds struck back injuring at least ten and leading to 50 arrests. US cruiser Fargo sailed to Venice as Slovenes poured in from the countryside.
In Dachau Belgium Malmedy massacre case 73 SS officers were found guilty of violating the laws of war by killing about 900 prisoners and civilians during the Battle of the Bulge. The verdicts came as defense contends before sentencing expected within days. The Amarillo Real Estate Board calls for fair rent control advisory panel.
Washington July 11 The Senate rejected 58 to 14 a Hawkes amendment to permit an immediate 5 percent rent rise and 5 percent increases later. The move would have required OPA authorization for rent hikes as Congress considers reviving price controls. The measure also aims to forbid federal rent controls in states that already have them.
Belgrade reports Mihailovic, leader of the Chetniks, made a final plea for his life saying he hates the Germans and denying collaboration charges. In a four hour address to the war crimes tribunal he urged fairness and reviewed his wartime career alongside 23 co-defendants.
Kansas City couple Mr. and Mrs. John Aquino welcomed triplets all girls after waits for a son following the birth of their first child three years ago.
Amarillo Independent School District plans to petition the city to close Fourteenth Avenue between Polk and Tyler after purchasing the Fuqua property for 107 500 dollars. The move would unite the 1400 block on Polk with adjacent blocks giving the district three continuous Polk blocks from Twelfth to Fifteenth and pave the way for a three story structure between the senior high and Elizabeth Nixon Junior High.
Senator Claghorn appeared in Houston for half an hour at the Southern Pacific station, mockingly pledging Confederate money and distributing dollar bills to voters. He urged Truman to rotate the White House toward the South and described a movie project in Hollywood titled It’s No Joke Son.
Weatherman H C Winburn notes a stray cloud over the Panhandle at noon. Four hundredths of an inch of rain reached the weather bureau with light sprinkles into Amarillo. Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, then clearing tonight and tomorrow, with cooler temperatures and milder conditions later. Rain totals varied from 0.07 to 0.38 inches across towns including Miami Pampa Memphis Clarendon Plainview and Hereford.
A fishing boat exploded and caught fire about a mile off Rockaway Point on Long Island. At least five people including the owner were burned, some seriously. Nearby boats rescued the injured and took them to shore hospitals.
Former Secretary of State Cordell Hull urged House passage of the 3.75 billion dollar British loan warning that the choice is cooperation for peace or drift into discord and possibly another world war. At Ellwood Park the Amarillo Garden Club hosted a hat making contest during their annual picnic. Fifty members and guests attended as Pauline Lakey spoke on food conservation before a style show. First prize went to Mrs. T. H. Rodgers for a vegetable decorated hat featuring lettuce beans carrots okra grapes squash and a china bird.
A Senate munitions investigation transcript shows Rep May of Kentucky protesting an eight inch shell production cutback for Batavia Metal Products. The call cited a friend, Henry Garsson, promoter of related firms, and whether Garsson received preferred treatment from the War Department while May claimed no improper benefit. Brig.
