Charles Legendre, wounded aviator paralyzed since Verdun in 1918, stood and walked with aid at the Hotel des Invalides during Commander Byrd and the America crew’s visit. He thanked Byrd, then joined the party at Napoleon’s tomb as Americans paid tribute to France’s broken air veterans. Premier Poincare later awarded Byrd the Legion of Honor at the ministry of finance.
A New York Ontario and Western express rear ended a switcher freight near Iona Island Station New York killing four people and injuring 23 as the engineer failed to halt for an open switch. Passengers were homeward bound from holidays when the crash occurred. The engineer Brandt and fireman Seymour Scott escaped injury.
In Primghar Iowa on July 6 Charles Bettinger 40 shot Leona Cochrane 27 the widow and wounded her companion Roy Aldrich to whom she was driving. Bettinger then drank carbolic acid and died. The widow remained gravely ill and Aldrich was wounded.
A United Press report from Seattle says a plane plunged into Lake Washington nocturnally, killing four men including pilot Harry Johnson. The victims named are John Dach Fred Stancliff and Robert Wolin. The craft fell from about 1000 feet and floated afterward with no cause known.
The Amarillo police and Panhandle Auto club will test brakes on Sixth Street from Buchanan to Lincoln. Cars with two wheel brakes at 20 mph must stop within 37 feet, four wheel brakes within 24 feet, tests run 9 AM to 5 PM with stamps and certificates issued. The tests respond to state law. Meanwhile Sanford oil fire from Phillips Petroleum gasser continues as crews plan night shot to extinguish flames. The blaze threatens Sanford business districts but no injuries reported.
Clarence Darrow, famed attorney, offered his services to the National Association opposing Blue Laws to help the Philadelphia teams win the right to play on Sundays in Philadelphia. In Watertown New York Captain Curtis Wheeler was killed and Carl Sacks fatally injured when their plane crashed at Pine Camp during National Guard training.
Paris dispatch reports Commander Richard E. Byrd plans to invite a standout American Boy Scout to join his Antarctic voyage after returning home. Byrd said he would confer with scout leaders and likely select a champion scout to accompany him if invited by Captain L Hopital and the French Boy Scouts.
Special to The Globe. Fred Ross, a black man, is being held by Donley county sheriff for investigation into the murder of Frank Weatherby, his wife, and two children found at their White Fish creek home. A court of inquiry was planned. Ross was said to own the pistol used. Funeral services for the Weatherbys were held at Hedley.
Winners in Amarillo Real Estate board's second annual golf tourney received prizes at a luncheon at the Amarillo hotel. Champion W. N. Cooper defeated T. J. Wagner and earned the John G. McKenzie loving cup along with a rod and line and golf balls. Runner-up Wagner received knickers stockings and an automatic pencil. Newbold won cigarettes and a tie in driving and putting. Lawrence captured a sweater, club and balls. Bowen got an ash tray for most birdies. Biggs earned stockings as runner-up in the second flight.
Compensations totaling 1 012 500 in stock and cash were approved for W T Kemper receiver and Clifford Histed receivers' counsel of the Kansas City Mexico and Orient railroad by Judge John Pollock in federal court in Kansas City Kansas. The ten year receivership of the road is covered.
Potter county jail holds Lawrence Gugler, William Gugler, and L W Yager on burglary charges linked to the Vega First State Bank robbery on June 15. A Kansas City lawyer and two other suspects face theft charges after loot found at 721 Bynum street. Police involve an Oklahoma desperado ring and a code letter between Burgess and the attorney.
Motorcycle Officer Lee Miller nabbed Lawrence Gugler alias L O Gaylor after a chase near the Herring hotel. Gugler faced charges of car theft assault with attempt to murder carrying a concealed weapon and resisting an officer. A second arrest followed with William Guyler and L W Yager on theft charges as more loot was linked to a Vega county address. The sheriff praised progress and police chief Gaither stressed further clearing up of the case.
