OSSINING NY July 5 1927 2000 Sing Sing inmates watched three youths drown in the Hudson as guards refused to permit a rescue attempt. A canoe skims the water as the strongest swimmer drags a companion toward safety before both lose strength.
Amarillo and vicinity forecast fair tonight and Wednesday. Today’s high 88 and low 64 with a year ago reading 82 and 64. Hourly temps range from 60 to 88 with peak at 1 p m. Griggs Ambulance 260. Fampus for Food and The Panhandie’s Meeting Place noted.
Reports from Jones Point say a New York Ontario and Western passenger train collided with a freight train, leaving several dead and about 75 injured. Ambulances rushed from Nyack New Burgh and Suffern as rescuers battled chaos at the scene south of Bear Mountain.
Dr. T. E. Wright aged about 50, Tulane graduate and medical innovator, died suddenly at his Monroe home today from heart disease. He originated an intervenous process for administering quinine in acute malaria cases.
Am arillo youths Hafford Forrest Wilson and furniture dealer D M Young were arrested in a police operation. Wilson, 18, confessed to burglaries of homes marked For Rent and stealing sewing machines, typewriters, tools, and more. Young, owner of 206-08 West Sixth Street, faces receiving and concealing stolen property charges after authorities identified a rug from Mrs. Killough as sold by his store. Both men are jailed and charged with felonies.
Governor Dan Moody led the All Texas Special on a publicity tour from Corsicana through the North and East. Officials hailed the trip as highly successful, saying it boosted Texas citizenship, credit, and eastern investment, with aviator Charles Pedley dropping Texas flags from the plane during the tour.
United Press reports indicate about 235 deaths and hundreds injured across three day Independence celebration. Most fatalities came from auto accidents and drownings, with New York and New Jersey hardest hit. Fireworks and firearms caused several deaths. Commander Richard E. Byrd told United Press he and companions likely will spend the coming weekend resting by the seaside and may sail next week. He noted Le Torquet might be chosen for the rest and denied plans to sail for the United States Saturday. In Paris he would visit Le Bourget Field, weather delaying landing. ceremonies honoring American volunteers with French officials and crowds marked Independence Day at the Washington equestrian monument.
Evangelist Arden P. Blaylock told San Jacinto Baptist church listeners that prayer holds power beyond reflex action. He described prayer as a soul's expression rising to God and essential to Christian living to overcome sin and worldly forces. Tonight he will discuss The Tragedy of an Unfruitful Life with song leader George Reynolds from Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

A brake testing campaign in Amarillo will begin this afternoon at Sixth and Pierce, under the Panhandle Auto Club with city police cooperation. Ed R Mayer notes Amarillo and Panhandle men who traveled east on the Special Texas will be guests of honor at a banquet at the Amarillo hotel Friday night. Letters were sent to Panhandle towns inviting representatives. Delegates plan to share impressions of the trip and local officials expect them home tonight or tomorrow.

Five theft charges are filed against L. O. Gaylor D. W. Gaylor and A. T. Johnson based on Amarillo residents identifying items found in a house and garage at 728 Bynum Street. Gaylor faces additional counts of assault attempted murder resisting an officer and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with an alleged attempt to shoot Motorcycle Officer Lee Miller.
At Wimbledon on July 6 American players swept four of five titles. Francia Hunter and Elizabeth Ryan defeated Mr. and Mrs. L A Godfree 4-6 6-0 in mixed doubles final to claim one of the championships. Miss Wills won the women's singles and, with Ryan, the women's doubles, while William T. Tilden and Hunter won the men's singles. The remaining men's singles title went to Henri Cochet of France.

Bernt Balchen, Byrd’s trans Atlantic crew member, will sail for the United States next Tuesday aboard the Leviathan to attempt a world duration distance flight in a Fokker under construction. He expects Byrd and the team may fail but will return to Amsterdam to oversee the South Pole plane. Fred E. Devers opens Panhandle Drilling office at Rule Building rooms 706-8.
