President Roosevelt answered indirectly to Rep. Hamilton Fish of New York who charged the president had no right to deduct from his federal funds. The exchange occurred at Hyde Park as the farm policy dispute continued.
The President outlined efforts to make his Hudson River land pay through forestry at a Fourth of July press conference. Congressman Fish had accused Mr. Roosevelt of tax avoidance, urging no deduction for losses from Hyde Park estate as it was a summer home not a profit driven farm.
A quiet Fourth of July celebration in Amarillo ended with twelve men and women held on drunkenness charges. Police described the night as largely peaceful overall.

The 161st Independence Day celebration records 314 deaths with no fireworks linked fatalities. Auto accidents cause 194 deaths, drownings 72, and 48 from other causes. This year ranks as the third largest casualty list since 1930, with an eight year average around 264 yearly deaths. From 1930 to 1937, total deaths reached 2,117.

The Caledonia completed a 351 mile leg from Southampton to New York for final preparations. After the transatlantic leg, it will fly in stages to New York with no passengers on the initial exploratory flight. Imperial and Pan-American Airways plan to cooperate during the experimental flights toward regular service. An alternate winter route was expected to be mapped.

Radio operators heard Amelia on 3 105 kilocycles from 2 15 A M Pacific Time at several stations in Howland Baker Wake Islands San Francisco and Honolulu. Officials suspect a hoax possibly broadcast from the coast or Phoenix Islands while a previous Saturday squeal and a voice saying From Earhart were noted.

Perris California July 5 Deputies arrest the parents on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of minors after nude children on a farm near Perris watched activities at a two week old nudist camp and fired firecrackers.
Parker Waggoner's papers and some money were found in Amarillo and left with police. Desk Sergeant Elmer Green stated the papers were in a purse and were being searched for the rightful owner.
Amarillo's Summer School Band will give the first of two free summer concerts Thursday night at 8:15 in the senior high school auditorium. Oscar Wise conducts a special program featuring a brass trio, a clarinet solo with band, harmonized Arrive Reveille and Taps among other pieces.

Members of Alpha Delta Sorority spent an enjoyable evening at Happy Glenn with a picnic followed by a bowling party. Miss Charlotte Cousins was initiated. Miss Lois King and Mrs Ila Burgess hosted a pre-nuptial shower for Pauline King at 1318 East Ninth Avenue with a pink and blue color scheme. Help Your Neighbor Club enjoyed a covered dish lunch at Mrs. L A Frampton home with guests Mrs Clyde Hollman of Plainview and Miss Arlene Killian. Attending members included Mesdames J M Killian Etta Hilderbrand George Killian R R Ingram L E Morman Clyde Terrell GC M Tomlinson and the hostess. The next meeting is scheduled at Mrs Ingrams home on July 5. Also a note recalls 1902 autos insured under marine policies covering collision risks aboard vessels.
The Will A Miller Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held their monthly meeting Friday afternoon at Mrs Walter R Irwin's home 3607 Van Buren Street with 11 members present. Vases of garden flowers decorated the reception room and the session opened with the Lord's Prayer led by Mrs L W.
Roll call in Patton notes current events. Mrs. A. F. Keirsey presided. Mrs. W. T. Brothers led the program with a paper on New Orleans recounting a recent visit and local historic sites. Hostess Olive K. Dixon and her mother provided refreshments. United States Plays served as favors.
