Slick Bridge Strategy Triumphs Over Guesswork

In Oswald Jacoby’s NEA Service column, South capitalizes on a simple sequence to make a game by playing from the start. West leads clubs, South covers with spades, and the king of spades drops unexpectedly, securing a safe claim even if East held a king.

Unbeatable contract hinges on fast spade distribution in hearts

The analysis outlines South’s plan against various card placements. If the jack of hearts drops, South can cash hearts and discard diamonds, with a passive defense leading to a safe trump endgame. If the jack does not drop, South aims to queen heart or ruff to force a favorable end. The scenario assumes East with king of spades or West with king of spades, noting that certain layouts would still beat or defeat the contract depending on singleton or doubleton spades and potential finesses.
