Boy Kills for Thrill Citing Cook's Fame in Texas
Lloyd Herschel Pierce 16 of Friona told Bowie County officers he was driven by an urge to kill and inspired by Billy Cook. He confessed to shooting 72-year-old Mrs. George Coleman of New Boston as she sat in her living room after seeking shelter from a cold wave. Pierce told how he stole a rifle, entered her home, spoke with her, then shot her in the back and looted the house. He said he felt no remorse and planned the killing after hunger drove him from his mother’s home. The interviewer noted Cook’s indictment for the kidnap murder of an Illinois family. Price Wage Freeze Moves Toward Final Issuance
Washington January 25 The Defense Mobilization Board approved a price and wage freeze to be issued today or tomorrow led by Charles E. Wilson. DiSalle and Ching will issue the orders, rolling prices back to January 2 while the wage formula allows continued bargaining and selective pay increases. Economic Stabilizer Johnston met with DiSalle and Ching as the plan aims for a simultaneous announcement. Meat and other foods will be rolled back, even as retail prices rose 2.8 percent from mid November to mid December. Enforcers, including more agents, are being deployed nationwide to implement the controls.
