In Los Angeles a Snow Sports Carnival crowns Josephine Fisher queen. She wears fur and flowers as coronation occurs in a tropical garden two hours from the snow mountains where she will preside over events.
Washington reports reveal administration hopes to push the money bill back to the House for amendments as Senator Glass opposes it. Debates draw visitors while the House advances the Vinson Navy bill and talks waivers on tax law flaws. A $270 million funding measure nears a committee vote as trucking interests attack regulation bills. See Congress Page 2.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson issued a proclamation for an extraordinary session to begin noon next Monday to pass laws issuing and selling remaining unemployment relief bonds and to grant foreclosure and mortgage relief during the present emergency. The session will consider extending moratoriums and relief procedures, with Lawrence Westbrook and state officials present as talks proceed. Bond bids were requested for 2.75 million dollars in additional relief bonds, part of a larger 5.5 million authorized, with federal matching expected.
Libby Holman the widowed torch singer studies dramatics at Hedgerow Theater directed by Jasper Deeter as 100 new registrations push Amarillo adult education to 965 for the federal program aiding unemployed teachers. Rural and city classes overflow with typing machines in use and teachers taking extra duties without pay.
The Open Forum Club hosts a non partisan program at Municipal Auditorium at 8 o clock Friday night to engage Panhandle youths voting for the first time. Mrs Phebe K Warner and Dr Warner praise the effort and publicity support from local leaders. Gertrude Foraker will preside at the meeting.
Partly cloudy and warmer tonight across Amarillo and West Texas. North portion stays warm Friday. New Mexico sees fair conditions tonight and Friday with cooler air in the northwest tonight. Temperatures range from 21 to 33 degrees.
New Orleans mayor T Semmes Walmsley announces he will not run in a second primary after completing Tuesday’s election with a 15 747 vote plurality over John Klorer. Klorer trailed Williams by 3 921 votes, and official results show Walmsley 47 753, Klorer 32 006, Williams 28 085, Homes 412.
Dallas reports a milder forecast reducing fears of a sharp cold wave for Texas. The weather bureau notes diminished intensity, with a center in Oregon and another in Minnesota/South Dakota. Freezing conditions expected as far south as Abilene, with snow and rain across the cotton belt. Shippers within 309 miles of Dallas urged to shield shipments in 24 to 36 hours as temperatures fall to 22 to 28 degrees north and 32 to 40 east and west.
Two men and a woman were arrested near Deahl after a high speed chase through Panhandle. Officers found blood stained back seat, two pistols, burglary tools, and $374. Suspects gave aliases Tom Antone and Jimmie Harris. wife unnamed. They claimed Oklahoma prison gang links and sought transfer to the Oklahoma Wardens.
A cruiser Velcro III anchored at Charles Island off Ecuador prompting a curious visit by Dr. Friederich Ritter and Frau Dore Strauch Koerchen to greet Capt. G. Allan Hancock, famed Los Angeles and Santa Barbara mariner, at the Galapagos site 600 miles from Ecuador.
In Shanghai a Chinese steamer named Weitung caught fire on January 21 in the Yangtse River. The vessel exploded and sank within minutes, killing 216 passengers and crew including men women and children. Only 34 escaped.
A surprise inspection by New York corrections chief Austin H. MacCormick at Welfare Island penitentiary exposed severe gang control and narcotics use. He labeled the jail “the worst prison in the world” after finding 1,700 inmates under two main gangster leaders with special privileges. The visit followed his arrival in town two weeks prior to assess conditions.
Gaines Whitsitt, county relief administrator, announced all CWA highway work will be suspended until Monday. Upon return workers will follow the national 24 hour week with eight hours daily Monday to Wednesday, and no work Thursday to Saturday.
Washington dispatch notes President Roosevelt will seek an emergency wartime appropriation of 1.666 billion dollars to fund Civil Works Administration Civilian Conservation Corps and direct relief. He aims to taper the program and wind it up by May hoping four million on the payroll find outdoor work. He faced vast idle unemployment and political pushback while urging continued action. In Berlin on January 25 a major finance talks began among foreign creditors of Germany, the Reichsbank, and government officials to debate a moratorium on part of foreign debt payments. Dr. Hjalmar Schacht was absent, and Vice President Dreyse presided amid reports of cabinet friction. The conference followed a cut in foreign interest and amortization payments. Former Governor James E Ferguson proposes using the code word Jim to borrow poll tax money without breaking the law. He says anyone asking for a dollar and a half must appear to have no funds and to be acting patriotically, with no questions asked while loaning the money.
In Paris at Parc Des Princes Deputy Andre Hesse and lawyer John Beineix fought a duel linked to the Bayonet bank scandal. Two shots per man produced no hits as 20 000 empty seats watched in cold wind. the duel ended without honor satisfaction.
