Tom Anglin former State Senator and current speaker of the Oklahoma House formally announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor. He is a Holdenville lawyer and would succeed incumbent William H Murray if nominated and elected.
In St Paul on January 24 a failed ransom attempt aimed at Edward Bremer, a 36 year old banker, unfolded when two abductor cars followed the wrong vehicle. The other car carrying Harry Beckman was halted near Hinckley as shots rang out. One sedan forced Bachman’s car to the roadside while attackers fired into the air, ending with Bremer still missing.
Chicago January 24 physicians attending Melvin A. Traylor 55 president of First National Bank reported he remains critically ill with pneumonia after a sudden turn for the worse. An all night vigil was held with his family at his bedside and doctors expressed hope he has passed the crisis.
Forecast covers Amarillo and area with partly cloudy conditions tonight and Thursday, possible light rain or snow tonight around 25 F. West Texas expected cloudy with rain in the southeast, turning to snow in the north, colder tonight 16 to 20 F, Thursday partly cloudy and colder with strong northerly winds and livestock warnings in the north. New Mexico outlook shows generally fair to tonight and Thursday with colder north and east portions. Temperature extremes noted from 38 to 64 F by 1 o'clock.

The House approved an appropriation bill totaling 284,747,000 dollars for the Navy for the next fiscal year and sent it to the Senate. The measure followed days of debate on military funding while administration willingness to accept committee changes in monetary legislation eased some Senate pushback.
More unemployed teachers will be put to work in Amarillo immediately. Supt. W A McIntosh, in telephoning Austin, was assured additional staff could join the CWA school. Twenty four teachers are now employed and enrollment exceeds 900 with afternoon and evening classes. Several new night classes will open and registration is urged.
In a four candidate mayoralty race Walmsley led with 41 066 votes from 240 precincts as Klorer trailed by over 14 000. Anti Long candidates Williams and Homes lagged, while incumbent district attorney Stanley led anti Long push with more than 46 000 votes.
Washington sources say the Texas Relief Commission may appoint Jack Reed of Galveston to replace Lawrence Westbrook as director, with Reed backed by Westbrook. Reed, formerly with Moody Seagraves interests, would be confirmed by Hopkins and subject to Senate approval amid opposition to a five member stabilization board.
Police pursue clues after a young man dressed neatly robbed grocer Harry Hayden at 600 Johnson Street and two customers of $51.40 at 9 pm. The bandit forced them to a dark spot two blocks away where the customers were looted of $1.40 and warned not to alert authorities. The grocer is brother to George Hayden of the police department. Chief Clark Cain said tips may lead to arrest.
Little Rock officials report the Arkansas House of Representatives passed the bill to refund the state's 155 million dollar bonded indebtedness and sent it back to the Senate for concurrence in amendments. The roll call stood 80 to 15.
New York January 24 A chef M Andre Fourngout was fired provoking a strike by 600 workers from the Amalgamated Food Workers Union at the Waldorf Astoria. Patrons faced hunger as dining rooms emptied during dinner hour while management tried to reroute service and charge customers for meals not served.
A northwest storm is due after dark bringing colder air and possible rain or snow to Amarillo and vicinity. Temperatures may dip to about 25 degrees with North Panhandle readings 16 to 20 above zero. Livestock warnings issued as strong northerly winds sweep across the Plains. Blizzard rages in Canada with three children missing near Sunnynock and a woman and her son unaccounted for near Tessier Sack.
S J Jacob Ruppert Bay of Whales Antarctica Jan 24 The flag ship of the second Byrd Expedition was driven from its berth along bay ice by southeast winds and marooned ashore. Twenty men remained ashore with three at Little America while the rest hid in abandoned supply caches four and a half miles south of the ice edge. The bay waters continued to churn as weather remained unsettled.
Five thousand automobile licenses remain to be purchased before penalties at midnight. February 1 marks seven days left for vehicle taxes, six days for poll and property taxes. School taxes share the county deadline. Payments rush in as fines loom. offices stay open until 6 30 PM.
Sheriff Bill Adams links a surge in car thefts to new federal prohibitions on railcar access and highway thumbing. Incidents include a Ford V8 stolen before a robbery near Grant Street, a Model A taken near Southwestern Bell, and a Buick seized from deputy Sidner after he was ambushed. Thieves flee with quick getaways and abandoned vehicles.

An audience of 2700 packed the Municipal Auditorium for Marcus Show I$ Applauded, La Vie Paree, a lavish revue. Between 1500 and 2000 fans went home disappointed as seating sold out, while fire officials enforced capacity rules. The crowd hailed A B Marcus S La Vie Paree as the most beautiful outing in years, with Ha Cha San delivering striking dance and elaborate scenes.
AUSTIN January 24 The Court of Criminal Appeals reversed Jack Robertson's liquor transport conviction in Harrison County after ruling the truck search without a warrant was illegal The officers stopped Robertson February 12 1933 and found 210 gallons of whiskey informants had said whiskey moved from Louisiana in similar trucks but the court found the information insufficient to justify the stop and search
Calcutta dispatch reports an enormous quake death toll in northeastern India. The Rajah of Monghyr says Monghyr city alone has 25 000 dead with weeks required to clear ruins and rehabilitate. The quake struck during Eidul Fitr. the Monghyr district lies along the Ganges in Bihar and Orissa.
A new bridge bidding system called The Four Aces and Joker is described by experts including David Burnstine and Oswald Jacoby. The approach discards Culbertson and Sims conventions, uses a uniform opening bid for any vulnerability, and allows a pass on a one over one bid. The system debuted with recent United States Bridge Association champions.
Madrid reports the Spanish attorney general urged the Supreme Court to grant a pardon to four Americans jailed in Palma Mallorca for assaulting a civil guard. Oklahoma extradition request seeks Joe Brown and Harry Neal from Borger Texas to Greer County Ohio to face robbery charges in the Willow First State Bank robbery on January 4 with $416 stolen. Pennsylvania Railroad declares a dividend of 50 cents per share.

Grant Wilson the British minister conveyed recognition on behalf of UK Canada Australia New Zealand and South Africa.
Cuero Texas January 24 Ervin Schroeder a 26 year old Westhoff bank clerk was found guilty of misappropriating funds in a bank robbery case. He admitted taking 900 dollars from bank vaults and hid it near San Antonio where officers later found an additional 2000 dollars in a seldom used safe. He initially claimed kidnapping and an armed robbery by two men.
William White known as Three Fingered Jack, 44, once a labor racketeer, is removed from Chicago public enemies list after dying in an Oak Park apartment. Police found his body with bullet wounds amid a drunken struggle. two women and a man were detained, including a woman who identified herself as White’s wife.
