Northampton Massachusetts January 23 Belief grows that Frances Smith a Smith College freshman missing since January 13 may have left to seek a different life. Her parents Mr and Mrs St John Smith broadcast a letter expressing care and hoping for her safety and choice. The message offers support and asks Frances to write if safe. The letter also notes she was extremely shy.
Chester Fallon, 14, was held today for the killing of his 16 year old sister Anna May during a pillow fight gone wrong while their parents were away. He said he fired a pistol “to scare her” after she scolded him about dirtying pillows, and the weapon discharged, killing her. The incident was reported by United Press. The Pan American conference opened with opposition to two proposals that could limit U S influence and expand regional solidarity among American republics, voiced by Dr Jacobo Varela of Uruguay and the Cuban delegation.
In Wellsville Missouri a publicity seeker or practical joker is suspected as the author of blackmail letters to two local business men. Attorney J J Collum calls the threats a prank and says they are not taken seriously.

The Associated Press reports an inmate at the San Antonio state insane hospital died by suicide. Fred Fritschik, transferred from Fayette County, hanged himself with a knotted noose from a window grate. An inquest was held and the death ruled self-inflicted.
Senator Hawes of Missouri assailed the army engineers river report during the first flood control hearing before the Senate commerce committee in Washington. The session focused on river management and flood prevention measures.
Eva Hickman, mother of Willian Edward Mickman, arrived in Los Angeles to aid in saving her son from the death penalty. She avoided interviewers and plans to meet him at the county jail, as charges loom in California's most ghastly crime.

Most southern states will have favorite sons to express opposition without direct home state battles.
Standard Oil of California through a subsidiary to be known as Paso Petroleum plans a refinery at El Paso Texas costing 760000 dollars. The plant will cover 125 acres, handle 10000 barrels daily and employ 190 men. Time inquiries to Nation Dray at 4622.
A large crowd of women gathered at 204 Polk Street for the first of five free cooking school lectures by Ida Chitwood. Classes run daily at 2 PM through Friday in the former Lindy Land building opposite Amarillo Athletic Club with merchants aiding the Globe-News in displays.
C S Wright 104 East Tenth Street a postal employee was killed eight miles east of Hereford after his car, disabled in a highway crash, was struck by a pursuing vehicle. Raymond Wright and others were in the party. two Canyon youths promised statements. Wright served twelve years at the Hereford post office.
Judge Heoary S. Bishop charges the January term grand jury urging careful consideration of cases to protect the innocent and avoid county expense. Foreman U N Olver leads a panel including Williams, Vers non, Smith, Short, Rosch, Gant, Cotten, Masterson Jr, Armstrong, Martin, and Pope. Court officials say little business is expected this term.
