Ship railway proposed to rival Panama Canal in Tehuantepec

European financiers reveal a plan for a 117 mile ship railway across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to compete with the Panama Canal. The line would use a 30 rail right of way with a floating drydock cradle and heavy locomotives, enabling ships to cross in about seven hours with tolls lower than the Panamanian route. The project hinges on a Mexican concession and includes dredging at Coatzacoalcos and Huayontlan to allow entry and harboring of vessels.
