Associated Press reports Pascual Ortiz Rubio, newly elected Mexican president, stopped in Phoenix at 8:00 a.m. on his journey from Grand Canyon Arizona to Nogales. He traveled in a private car attached to a special train Griggs ambulance.
Charles Getchell a World War I veteran living in Minneapolis was killed by two bootleggers one wearing a mask. Police found six gallons of liquor at the scene and believe rival bootleggers killed him after his territory was threatened. His wife and a roomer witnessed the shooting as Getchell reportedly sold liquor to support his family.
Earl Renois, back in Amarillo from Fort Worth after the Burneburn burglary, faces two burglary charges in Abilene for similar robberies. A Mexican, allegedly connected to the Abilene thefts, claimed Renois supplied the goods. Mrs. Renois remains jailed locally. Deputy N T O Bar of Abilene transported Renois to Abilene.
The Mexican foreign office said the Laredo consulate will reopen tomorrow after weeks of closure. Staff will be reassembled from El Paso San Antonio and other points. Boxwell Bros. ambulance Ph. 9211.
The Panhandle Plains Texas finance committee plans a 50000 dollar expenditure program for 1930 including immigration drive and other projects. E B Black chair presented to 40 representatives at Amarillo Hotel. Rail representatives and Mayor Ernest O Thompson praised 1929 results and pledged support. General Manager Howard A Ferguson outlined 1930 exhibits and business like committee work. The meeting adjourned for Chamber luncheon and will resume in the afternoon.
A blaze broke out in the Amarillo Hotel kitchen between the first and second floors last night. Firemen saved the building before it gathered headway and noted they could not determine the cause. Two automobile fires occurred last night and this morning, the department’s other calls.
Contracts for 36 airplanes costing $456 812 were let today to the Chance Voight Corporation of Long Island by the Navy Department. The Corsair type, two seated, can be converted from sea to land planes and will be used aboard battleships and aircraft carriers.
Senator Wheeler asks the Interstate Commerce Committee to summon W. K. Henderson of station KWKH Shreveport to answer questions about the language used on his station. No action taken at once.
Stratford police sought Marie Duttner nineteen and Violet seventeen on warrants for liquor running. The sisters allegedly carred liquor between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, dumping twenty six five gallon cans after a crash near Stratford. An escort car and two vehicles were involved before the girls vanished again.
In Congress agitation over the Volstead Act continues with Rep Linthicum of Maryland leading a so called wet bloc. President Hoover names Charles E. Eberhardt as new United States Minister to the country, while DeWitt Malone admits authoring a British document and Elena Osete Fraila wins a major Spanish lottery prize. CC Tatshonky, Boston Trust Company president, accepts the U S minister post to Czechoslovakia.

Amarillo reports four straight days below freezing, a new record since 1905, with only brief warm spells and continuing snow totals. Cattlemen note stress on herds but no major fatalities amid the severe cold.
Moscow reports unconfirmed word that Capt. Carl Ben Eielson and Karl Borland landed near the Anguema River 120 miles from Cape North. search orders issued with dog teams and planes from Providence Bay. Eielson and Borland were missing since November while aiding the icebound Nanik near North Cape.
