Clarence D. Chamberlin and Roger Williams launched from Roosevelt Field at 10 11 30 a m aiming to regain the world endurance flight record for the United States. The prior day’s attempt ended four hours after start when a gasoline pump failed, stopping fuel flow to the gravity tanks in the Bellanca aircraft.
In Columbus Ohio Thelma Weaver 13 Lulu 16 and Mabel Thompson 18 were attacked by a fiend with a slender knife injuring Thelma and Mabel while Lulu escaped. In Rankin Texas two unidentified bank robbers were slain by Upton County officers after a four hour watch and gun battle tailed by a bank robbery tip. A telegram with the name J C Frederick and a car number were found on the younger suspect. The Rankin bank was previously targeted Tuesday. Investigators continue probing the bank killings as Fort Worth reports outline the case.
Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York declines dinner attendance due to state business and sends a brief letter to Democratic national committee chairman Shaver to be read at the Jackson Day dinner. William G. McAdoo will speak, and intrigue surrounds the 1928 convention field with Detroit and San Francisco strong contenders.
Washington reports Houston Texas was chosen today as the site for the 1928 Democratic National Convention signaling a pivotal gathering for the party. The decision follows a period of internal debate among party leaders and regional delegates.
New York judge altered the stay hearing time for Ruth Snyder from 10 a m to 2 pm causing confusion over delays. Attorney General Ottinger ruled the stay illegal and said Snyder could be executed at Sing Sing tonight despite the stay. The decision followed a call between Governor Smith’s temporary offices and Ottinger.
The destroyer Maury carried the naval board of inquiry witnesses and newspaper men from Boston toward Provincetown to witness a reenactment of the S-4 collision with the coast guard destroyer Paulding. The incident resulted in 40 deaths.
Earl McGrew, tagged as the third man in the killing of Leo J. Laley, was sentenced to 20 years in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to highway robbery in Johnson county. The case connects with Jack Davis and Clayton Tontz, who await trial. Mrs. Laley identified Davis and Tontz as entering the store. McGrew was noted as a 20 year old, tall, handsome youth.
Major Louis M. Bourne, Marine aviator, left Anacostia Naval Air Station at 6 25 AM on a one stop flight to Nicaragua in a three motor Fokker transport. He will stop in Miami for arrival between four and five PM and proceed to Managua if weather allows. Teammates Lieut Jacob F Plachta and Sergeant Benjamin F Belcher accompany him as they follow the route used by Major E K Brainard last November.
Mrs Calvin Coolidge arrived from Washington to visit her 78 year old mother Mrs Lemira Goodhue in Northampton. The elder woman has been ill with influenza at Dickerson hospital since December 11.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at City Drug for Able's Irish Rose at the Auditorium next Tuesday. First comers will choose seats in a rush expected due to strong interest and a large crowd anticipated for the Tri-State Fair association presented comedy.
In Los Angeles on January 12, William Edward Hickman faced a potential death sentence but remains blocked by a juvenile court ward status. Judge Robert Scott dismissed a petition that had kept Hickman under juvenile court jurisdiction during his forgery trial last summer, preventing a superior court trial or hanging.
A Crosby county fire killed a two year old girl and injured three siblings. The 6 month old sister is not expected to live and a 4 year old brother is critically burned. Howard Pitehart rescued the siblings and sustained minor burns. The blaze, caused by a overturned running stove, struck the H L Gregory farm south of Ralls.
The Texas State Supreme Court upheld lower court rulings allowing removal of Hansford County seat to Spearman but left other issues unresolved. It allows re submission of the seat location in under two years while challenging points on two thirds majority remain pending. In Rockford Alabama a local novelty reports a free marriage license lottery for the first woman to prove she "gets her man."
United Press reports SOS calls from the freighter Griffen 485 miles offshore en route to Honolulu after departing from Port Townsend. Eight distress signals signed Griffen or KDPN prompted Mackay Radio to coordinate rockets for position fix as rescue ships head toward a presumed location 300 miles south of Cape Flattery.
Robert L. Harp, 21, a high school graduate, surrendered and told authorities I just killed my father and mother. He said dad was in the radio room when the confession came and that he struck him from behind. He chased his mother in the yard and denied asylum, saying he had had enough. The bodies were found as his directions indicated, with an axe used in the killings.
Secretary Wilbur told the House Naval committee that the Navy has drafted a comprehensive 20 year construction program. The 725 million program previously announced is only a part of the overall plan.
George J. Hassell, sentenced to die February 10 for the murder of his family, will be transported from Plainview to Huntsville within the week. He is in good health and spirits and has said little about his impending death.
