Fire Loss Tops $150000 in Amarillo for 1947
Amarillo fire marshal Ed Spann estimates the city's approximate share of national fire losses in 1947 at more than 150000 dollars excluding December. January to November losses totaled 170, etc. Chief George Cooper notes the toll goes beyond monetary figures. Nationwide, 11000 people died in fires last year and the average American spends 3.69 dollars per year per person on fire protection. A four person family would pay 14.76 dollars for safety and 11.66 more if losses were shared equally, totaling 26.42 dollars.
