In Houston a rooming house fire revealed J. C. Garner 35 dying from shotgun wounds and his common law wife Eunice Lewis 38 severely beaten. A bloodstained hatchet and a single barrel shotgun lay nearby as police investigate a possible homicide and arson.
Weather reports note a slight thaw interrupted a deep freeze that hurt orchards. Temperatures rose three to four degrees from the prior two nights as rescue crews reached a tavern at Rockport where travelers were marooned by a severe blizzard.
Across the Ohio River valley and gulf states floods drove thousands from homes as record rains drenched Columbus and surrounding areas. A heat wave hit New York while stranded travelers found relief at a Rockport tavern as weather gradually eased per officials.
New assistant fire chief in Roy Hill, appointed by Fire Chief George Cooper, fills a post created months ago. Hill led five through the civil service exam, joined the department in 1917, and has served since January 16, 1937, except for two resignations. He has been drillmaster since September 5, 1947, is 52, and resides at 210 Crestway.
Louis Bob Conley of Amarillo faces trial on federal charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The Army pressed the Harnack House officer civilian club in Berlin to stop excluding GIs or lose federal subsidy. Maj. Gen. George Hays warned the board that discrimination with federal funds is barred, while a private club reorganization option was discussed. Public Truman response reported as favorable 20 to 1 with about 200 telegrams.
Virgil Whaley, a Bonham junk dealer, was robbed of $1700 by two armed men who shot the store roof, struck him with a sand bag, and tied him to a fence post before fleeing. A passing motorist helped and took him for aid. A woman drove the getaway car.

A U S review board reversed the death and life sentences of 11 Germans from the Malmedy massacre case. Gen. Lucius Clay approved findings that evidence did not sustain convictions. Eleven men remained in Landsberg Prison with unclear status as of January.
Carroll Temple Jr., 15, is alleged by his father to have spent 50 thousand dollars stolen from a family bank deposit box during a three month Florida trip. The suit targets the First National Bank of Catawba County for allegedly permitting access to the funds.

Tracks at the dock offer no value clue. Discovered around 12:30 AM by a Santa Fe Railway special agent. police are investigating.
Circuit Judge Cleon K. Calbert fined himself ten dollars for appearing intoxicated in Harlan Kentucky court. He ordered a county bootlegging investigation last week but returned Tuesday only to dismiss proceedings. Jurors collected the fine in court.
Three people died when a Texas and Pacific freight train struck their car at a crossing in North Pecos. The victims were Dan W. Warwick and Flora Mae Hamilton of Pecos and Wesley K. Ulmer of Anthony New Mexico.

Re routing and widening of US Highway 66 between Amarillo and Bushland to avoid a dangerous Rock Island underpass nears reality. The plan calls for a 4 lane road with 80 ft right of way and a 200 ft new right of way, a southern alignment, elimination of the underpass, and a fork to North East Eighth joining near Veterans Hospital. State local and federal cooperation fund the project, with the county acquiring ROW title before transfer to the state.
