San Diego January 6 Alma Rubens a screen actress released eleven months earlier from a state institution and deemed cured faced arraignment on federal narcotic violation charges. Authorities reported finding 120 grains of narcotics in her purse and in the hem of an evening gown. She claimed the maid framed her. the maid was released after verification of the accounts.
Secretary Wilbur stated against a tariff on oil saying it would benefit big producers by increasing supply while doing little for small producers. A freak wind storm killed six people across Caswell Warren and Mecklenburg counties and nearby in Virginia. Four Black residents died in Warren County while a child perished at a Farm Life school near Ridgeway. Injuries occurred near Yanceyville and Boydton with many structures damaged.
Edna Fitzgerald wife of Dick Fitzgerald was released on $500 bond after habeas corpus and faces charges of possessing a deadly weapon. James Harwood 25 and John Meeks 30 were arrested with a burglary tools kit found in their car. Harwood and Meeks remain jailed.
Oklahoma crops valued 54.3 percent below 1929 levels. Total harvested acreage declined 3.7 percent from 1929, as reported by Harry B. Cordell president of the state board of agriculture.
United Press reports a strong start to 1931 with thousands returning to work across railroads and auto plants. Major rail lines rehired thousands while Detroit Ford plants added 22,000 workers and Ford branches in Denver and St Paul added 1,050. Cleveland industries including auto products restored 1,800 positions.
Five southwestern railroads report hundreds of workers returning to their shops after over three months of idleness. Texas & Pacific at Marshall with 1,000 employees reopened, Fort Worth and Denver reemploys 475 at Childress, Southern Pacific brings back 850 at El Paso, and Houston sees 250 idle workers return.

Four miners were killed and four others missing after a local explosion at the Glen Rogers Mine of Raleigh Wyoming Coal Mining Company in Wyoming County West Virginia.
