Congress returns to a bitter mood as deadlock on drought relief and unemployment aid deepens. New tensions loom with reports of food demonstrations in Arkansas highlighting broader political strife and unresolved policy fights from the short session.
Three men died when a plane traveling from Shreveport to Dallas crashed into a tree in fog near Overton Texas. Victims were Horace F. Clark 26 Dallas Tom Holcombe 20 Midland and H Addison Noever 26 Dallas pilot Never. Bodies were moved to Tyler after the wreckage was cleared.
A test flight near Rosecrans Airport ended in a fatal crash when a monoplane tore a wing fabric and entered a fatal dive at 200 mph. Victims were Winston L. Hyatt pilot, Leroy Reimer pilot, and Harold E. Payne mechanical dentist, all residents of the city. The wreckage buried in a ravine.
Arthur Brisbane surveys a new year 1951 tone with reflections on cosmic scale and human vanity. He cites Harvard astronomy on 18 000 galaxies and the Large Magellanic Cloud to frame a skeptical view of market moves and personal success.
The House approves a $45,000,000 drought relief bill with about $3,750,000 for Texas farmers in 1930 drought districts. Loans will be distributed immediately. The measure reflects tensions between Hoover and Senate leaders and discussions of an extra session and enforcement commissions. Senator Caraway plans a separate $15,000,000 food loan bill for drouth areas.
An attempted bank robbery ended in a chase and arrest after the car crashed into a culvert. The trio registered under aliases Mrs America Longworth 19 Noel Craft 16 and Rex Wireman 20. The use of disguises and a hasty exit followed by pursuit led to capture.
Edna Fitzgerald and two men, James Harwood and John Meeks, were arrested in a vehicle in the business district with a large set of burglary tools. Twelve items included a tire-casing hammer pad and improvised tools. Police link the kit to a recent Elk City Oklahoma wholesale burglary. five Amarillo firms named on a list found with the group.
Esther Johnsson daughter of Mrs B Y Blackwell 1222 Harrison St has been unanimously chosen by the International Mozart Foundation to perform at the January 27 opening of the Salzburg Mozart jubilee. Her acclaim in Paris and Salzburg follows a debut recital in Paris and six Salzburg concerts within two months drawing praise from critics.
Justice Bailey in the District of Columbia Supreme Court modified the consent decree to let the four leading packers handle vegetables fruits milk coffee teas cereals and similar products up to retail stores. They may not retail meats or other products. The ruling also bars packers from owning stockyards market newspapers and terminal railroads.

A gear break stalled The Globe News printing, forcing a special four page edition from Canyon News to serve Amarillo readers. The Globe News plant was repaired by morning and regular editions resumed with late subscribers receiving copies via Globe at night. Clyde Warwick aided the effort and Canyon News personnel opened their plant to print the special edition starting at 2 a.m.
The United States Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction of Louis E. Thibault for possessing and selling two pints of whiskey, ruling the 7th amendment was constitutionally adopted. Separately the Supreme Court hearing on the New Jersey 18th amendment invalidation was requested to be postponed to April 16, with counsel arguing the ratification method had not been settled by the court.
Ross M. Lambdin, local attorney, was appointed assistant county attorney by Rhea Myers and took the oath of office as county attorney on the first. Lambdin previously worked with Judge W. A. Palmer and came to the Panhandle from Waco in 1926.
The Omaha Welfare Association estimates a five member family can eat on $9.25 a week. The plan aims for minimum proper nourishment rather than cheapest options, indicating current costs meet basic needs but may differ from frugal choices.
Fair conditions continue tonight and Tuesday with warmer temperatures. West Texas and New Mexico regions show fair weather with slight cooling in extreme southeast portions and a mild warmup by Tuesday. Temperatures around 46 as the high and 27 as the low today. Sunrise at 7 56 and sunset at 5 51 tomorrow.

Gov Dan Moody of Texas will join Governors Holloway of Oklahoma and Reed of Kansas in naming committees to meet in Washington on January 15 to discuss oil industry problems. Oklahoma City report says major oil states are invited to a national relief conference to plan immediate relief for the industry, with delegates from both industry and the general public.
Pacific Coast listeners will hear Amos N Andy at 7 p.m. Pacific time on weekdays except Thursday. Stations KFLD KECA KSL KOM KHQ and KGW join the midwestern network, moving the program from 8:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific. On Thursdays 8:30 p.m. PST remains.
January 5 marks the resumed school term for about 9,500 Amarillo pupils. Superintendent W. A. Metosh notes enrollment may rise by 500 to 2500 after holidays while new principals arrive at Dwight Morrow and other campuses. Bivins and Sam Houston Junior Highs near occupancy and Fred Douglas addition nears completion.
The Potter County Federation of Women's Clubs pledges a mass campaign to provide steady odd job employment.
