Morgenthau to Broadcast Sunday War Speech on Public Financing

Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr will deliver a 15 minute nationwide radio address Sunday night titled The Job Ahead. He will discuss the public's role in financing the war effort. Ankara, capital of Turkey, has 155,544 population per the 1940 census.

WPA sewing projects in Panhandle produce thousands of garments

Five Works Progress Administration sewing projects used about nine and a third miles of material to manufacture 8243 garments in the last fiscal month. The Potter County operation at 604 North Filmore Street leads production with 26 workers in Randall County, Swisher, Hutchinson and Gray. The program aids needy clients and supports local families with clothing and even small home purchases, while restricting new assignments to speed production due to winter needs.

Wood wool substitutes gain foothold in Swiss economy

Artificial wool from wood is expanding in Switzerland as blockaded Europe substitutes wool and cotton. Switzerland now produces about 30 tons daily, still far from prewar 135 tons, but more plants are being built and industrialists expect the industry to persist after the war.

Buenos Aires reports that a Japanese submarine halted the steamship Copiapo off the west coast of South America. Lloyds lists the Copiapo as a 7,279 ton Chilean passenger and freight steamer registered in Valparaiso. The report is the first indication Japanese submarines may be operating along the South American coast.

Axis loss tally tops 14000 planes in war to date

British official reports show Axis aircraft losses amounting to 8,935 in the Middle East and Western Europe and 3,961 elsewhere through 1941. Coupled with Russian claims of over 5,000 German planes destroyed in the East, Axis losses exceed 13,900 in action since the war began.

Friona Girl Hurt in Canyon Amarillo Crash

Miss LaNelle Brigance aged 17 of 13 miles northwest of Friona was seriously injured when her car rear ended a butane truck on the Canyon Amarillo highway. Passenger Neil Talkington 19 of Friona was slightly hurt. truck driver Pred Williams of Plainview reported the event occurred as the truck slowed for a preceding car. An ambulance was sent from Canyon with John Conway Jr of Floydada contributing to the response.
