Czar of Stock Car Racing Doing Fine

Oscar Frailey profiles Bill France, promoter and organizer of stock car racing, who built the sport’s national structure. France runs events in five states, sanctions races nationwide, and pilots as a hands on promoter. He started after the war with modest means and now pilots signs, planes, and multiple cars while supporting young drivers with affordable standard cars. France’s hands on approach includes managing venues, parking, concessions, and safety, earning him the nickname hungry but generous. He envisions a future where many youths can pursue racing despite costs, citing examples of winners using borrowed or rental cars.
