Twenty years ago tomorrow February 9 1909 N S Griggs opened at 506 Polk street in Amarillo the first establishment in the Panhandle for exclusive funeral service though he had sold funeral services previously with the furniture business. With the ambulance a horse drawn hearse and Albert Parks as the sole employee he could handle the work swiftly and still have spare time.
The firm shows its growth with a new name N S Griggs & Sons and a modern fleet including four ambulances and six enclosed cars. It notes eight staff, among them the Panhandle’s only licensed lady embalmer, serving Amarillo and the Panhandle. Phone 4311.
