The House passed one of the toughest strike-control bills by a 257 to 155 vote as Republicans and Southern Democrats united to override pro union opposition. The record notes concern over potential famine and urges allied nations to cooperate while Americans cut consumption to avert starvation.
The Soviet Ukraine asked the UN Security Council to set up a special on the spot investigation of the Indonesian crisis accusing British troops of suppressing the native movement. The council also planned to discuss Syria and Lebanon request to remove British and French forces from the Levant.

Ross M. Lambdin 61 died from a heart attack Thursday morning in a local hospital. An Amarillo attorney with Sanders & Scott he came to Amarillo in 1926 and practiced law since. He served as assistant county attorney and worked for the Forest Reserve System 1914 to 1918. He was secretary treasurer of Preress Milling Co and a member of the Amarillo and Texas Bar Associations.
Amarillo stockmen and grain buyers watch Washington as the president calls for food conservation based on wheat. Milling chief Paul J. A gasoline laden barge exploded in the Houston ship channel near Galena Park causing a fire that spread to gas on the water. Two people were killed and 16 injured, with crews evacuating nearby homes as authorities fought the blaze and searched for missing crewmen aboard the Carthage. Several vessels were damaged or sunk and a dock burned as conditions calmed after the flames.
The House Military Committee reopened a universal military training bill and plans four more days of hearings starting February 18 after recent public hearings. Chairman May of Kentucky said the measure is a priority and will be pursued one way or another.

The subregional Veterans Administration office will occupy the entire fifth floor of the Oliver Eakle Building, recently vacated by the Bureau of Reclamation. An initial 40 employees will work there, rising to about 150 as full operation is reached, serving 26 Texas Panhandle counties plus western Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Panhandle, with 50 000 veterans in the territory, enabling local VA business transactions for Amarillo residents.
