Pelgen Made 10 000 Saddles Over 53 Years at Apache Leather

Ed Pelgen of Apache Leather Goods recalls a 53 year career turning out saddles from Teva to Chicago. He notes design shifts from square to round skirts, higher cantles to today’s lower seats, and an 18 to 20 inch bulge change. He remembers earning 20 cents per saddle and now spends about 18 hours per piece. He has built saddles for three wars, supervised Chicago firm facilities in WWI, and created saddles for Texas cattlemen in WWII.
