In Austin on February 1 the Texas House approved a fair association horse racing bill by one vote on a test ballot. The measure, proposed by Rep. J. D. Five railroad workers died when passenger train 146 on the Louisville Henderson St Louis line crashed head on with a freight eight miles from Henderson Kentucky at 3 35 am The dead include two Louisville engineers one passenger train fireman a baggage man and a freight brakeman All bodies were unrecoverable at first light and witnesses noted a slow approach before the crash and sudden brake grinding.
Eugene Cecil, 35, air mail pilot on the Cleveland to Pittsburgh route, was found dead in the wreckage of his plane near Morgantown West Virginia. The crash occurred off course with the aircraft nosed into the ground. his hands and feet remained on the controls and his head was crushed by the cockpit rims.
Detectives report a threat to kill Chief Officer Harry Manning, famed for rescuing the Florida crew, unless his mother pays 7000 dollars. A letter mailed from New York’s General Post Office warned the mother to leave the money or the son would be dead by Sunday. The family is unsettled and the claim could not be independently confirmed.
District court dismissed the bigamy charges against H. Adams which had stood since 1927 due to absence of witnesses. Also, liquor charges against Bill McClelland were dropped for lack of prosecuting witness George Gay, whose testimony was deemed unreliable by the district attorney.

Former Speaker Lee Satterwhite opposes a bill to let the state prison board sell prison farm property and relocate. He and a Fort Bend delegation will address the House and Senate prison committees. The plan concentrates sale and purchase power in the prison board with Gov Moody backing a special session if needed. An eighth prison board member, Jack B. Holder of Fort Worth, was appointed. a ninth member will be named soon.

An Amarillo boy was attacked by a stray cat badly lacerated as the cat’s teeth pierced him. Police shooter Frank Gablin killed the cat and Terrell Laboratories will test for rabies. Lee Ogden of Bowie county pled guilty in federal court to three counts of violating the national motor vehicle theft act. Judge W. Lee Estes sentenced him to five years in prison for each count, to run concurrently, with three years suspended on good behavior and parole to a U S marshal in Texarkana.
The amended first deficiency bill carrying 24 million dollars for enforcement was sent to conference with the Senate after a 240 to 141 vote to bar a conference-keeping move. Mellon opposed, arguing the funds would do more harm, as wets and drys split votes amid a broader prohibition debate.
