French General Giraud Arrests 12 Prominent Figures
Gen Henri Giraud announced the preventive arrests of 12 Frenchmen in Algiers to avert potential plots against him and Adm. Darlan’s successor and to curb leaks. He said some were pro Axis or had warned German plots, while others aided the Allies during the Nov 8 landing. Giraud stressed prevention, not punishment, and promised no executions. He urged support from America and Britain to equip French forces in Tunisia and win the war.
