Stassen accuses White House officials of delaying disclosure of insiders in the 1947 commodity market. A spokesman for Secretary Anderson denied withholding names and the admin was criticized for slow reporting of grain trading activity on Oct. 31, 1947, and Oct. 31, 1946.
Republican presidential candidate Harold Stassen accuses the administration of delaying disclosure on whether current or former government insiders traded in commodity markets. He cites five key questions and urges immediate answers as secret lists begin to surface ahead of Congress.
The Hearing opened amid postponement hints as US officials weigh UN accord issues. Isidore Englander challenged jurisdiction arguing only the question of accreditation to the UN matters. UN envoy Lie urged consultation before any deportation, while Kyriazidis faces immigration charges linked to alleged political affiliations.
Bremond Texas dispatch reports Sheriff Bob Reeves shot and killed a bank robber as he and an accomplice fled with about 10000 dollars from the Bremond State Bank. The bandits had held two bank employees and two customers before fleeing in a car.
Witness Hans Eugene Barber said Sheriff was in the garage office when two masked men entered the Bremond bank. Reeves fired at a robber in the car, killing him. a second bandit fled, later rolling his dead companion from the door. Green 1946 Chevrolet with Texas plate EP 585 linked to the crime. A new all time high price of 40 dollars per hundred pounds was paid for top grade steers at the Chicago Stockyards. Omaha paid the same price for 19 head of Angus steers. The 1220 pound load in Chicago set the record for choice to prime fed steers with other top grades up to 50 cents higher. Veal calves also rose with highs of 33.50 at Indianapolis and 35 dollars at St. Louis.
Roy Boger Jr expects his French bride to be Renee Annie Foreychet plane tonight at 7 45 oclock. She arrived in the United States yesterday after flying from Lyon France where they met in January 1946 while he served as a B 17 pilot. The couple plans to marry here around the start of the year with details to follow. North Amarillo will gain a new post office sub-station with a superintendent and two clerks after a decision by Post Office officials. Postmaster W D De Grassi announced the plan following a Kiwanis Club meeting and cited Tom C Cargill’s confirmation that re establishment is justified. The unit will restore full postals in North Amarillo after eight years and join existing San Jacinto station and five contract posts in the Amarillo area.
Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines after a White House conference with President Truman said the United States would likely secure military bases in Panama despite the Panama assembly rejecting a lease for 14 bases. Representative Engel warned of a possible new Atlantic Pacific canal site if Panama persists, arguing the 1942 base agreement remains until WWII peace treaties are signed.
