Panhandle irrigation pioneer D L McDonald dies at 75
D L McDonald, a leading Panhandle authority on water wells and the discoverer of the Hereford irrigation district, died early today at Scott and White Clinic in Temple at age 75. He had been ill since November 3 after a stroke. Funeral details were not announced. He helped found Hereford’s real estate business and drilled wells that supplied Amarillo, Borger, Dumas, Lubbock and other Texan cities. He arrived in 1904 and became a pivotal figure in irrigation and cattle breeding in the region.
