San Antonio dispatch reports H. P. Drought state WPA administrator said 13 000 additional Texas jobs will be available in January bringing total on WPA projects to about 65 000. Drought spoke after regional director meetings in New Orleans and staff heads in San Antonio.
El Paso officials press the telephone company for a multi year franchise with tax on 1937 gross receipts as Amarillo avoids franchise taxes. The mayor notes the city has a 90 day notice termination with the current operator and urges a definite term before agreeing. Commissioner Jenkins says years of talks have lingered five years.
Ames Ia Dec 17 Dr A R Laver Iowa State College psychologist and traffic safety researcher says the safe driver is a man without domestic troubles aged 32 to 37, about five feet ten inches tall and weighing 170 to 180 pounds. He notes tested 18,000 drivers and favors those above average in mentality and physique.
The local American Legion is invited to attend cornerstone laying ceremonies at the Legion sponsored Texas Memorial Museum in Austin Dee 19. The museum, funded by the Texas centennial 50 cent coin, sits one block north of the University of Texas Memorial Stadium.

Glyn Warren Philpot a 56 year old painter and one of the Royal Academy's youngest members died in London yesterday. His career included frequent expatriate work and exhibitions across Britain and Europe. Philpot was known for his landscapes and portraits. He held memberships in several art circles and influenced a generation of British painters.
Private funeral services were held for Evelyn Taylor at 10 this morning with only family present. She is the 21 year old Amarillo girl missing since October 29 after leaving a dance hall. Burial followed at Llano Cemetery. The body was found in a drainage tunnel near the Santa Fe shop yards. Investigators continued work with two Mexican material witnesses in custody and plans to question an American.
A long line formed outside the 413 Fillmore Street post office substation as Amarillo residents queued to mail Christmas parcel post packages. Postmaster W D De Grassi announced hours from 8 o clock in the morning until closing to handle the holiday mail load.
Ernest R. Duke county agent of Poster County presides at the Panhandle Hereford Breeders Association meeting replacing Julian Bivins. The 1 PM session discusses bull auction sales at the Amarillo Pat Stock Show next March and other association problems.
District Judge W. E. Gee refused to grant a new trial after Boyce Long, a highway patrolman, received a judgment for nearly 000 against Roy Broaddus over injuries from a traffic accident. Long was injured when his motorcycle collided with a taxicab.
Clyde Patterson was arrested here last night by sheriff's officers and is being held for Harris County authorities at Houston where he faces a car theft charge.
Judge E. C. Nelson sentenced three 17 year olds to the state prison after guilty pleas. Gordon Reese drew four years in two forgery cases, William Mitchell four years in two burglary cases, and Carl Edward Hays two years for burglary. Mitchell and Hays are described as negroes. Mitchell had already received a two year burglary term Wednesday.
The U S treasury reported the public debt rose to 37 562 835 918 on December 15 surpassing the prior record of 37 220 897 842 set September 14. The jump of over 450 million reflects net bond and note sales to the public.

Eleven year old George Kopatz began with five dollars to buy groceries and later told police he slept in a playground after days spent at the cinema. He said he watched a film daily from eleven in the morning to eleven thirty at night. He added I like movies.

The first German helium transport ship departed for Houston last week. The gas will move by rail from Amarillo to Houston and be pumped into high pressure steel containers aboard the German steamer. The first cargo should reach Friedrichshafen late January. Two new dirigibles are being built to use helium, replacing the Hindenburg.
John G. Hardin 83 millionaire philanthropist dies at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Funeral set for Burkburnett First Baptist Church with Rev. Miles Hays leading. Hardin arrived nine months ago after a severe illness and had been critical. He built a fortune over six million dollars and donated much to education civic and humanitarian causes.
Former Governor Miriam A. Ferguson refused to discuss a possible run for governor while her husband James E. Ferguson said she had no intention to run. Governor Allred was also preparing a statement about a potential third term.
Bernice Felton an 18 year old mother to a newborn daughter in Rockford Illinois as Lester Brockelhurst once sentenced to die for the murder of Victor Gates faces execution in an Arkansas prison. Felton and Brockelhurst were tried in Lonoke Arkansas for the Little Rock plantation owner's murder. she was acquitted of involvement.
