Paris police arrested an American salesman Robert Switz and his wife along with a Canadian couple in a sweep they described as the head of a 10 person espionage ring reaching into the French Ministry of Marine. Seized were 19000 francs, 33000 and 12000 francs in various pockets, three wireless sets, military documents and photographic equipment, with searches underway for two escaped members.

Roosevelt extends reemployment agreement for four months

President Roosevelt signed an executive order extending the President's reemployment program for four months beyond January 1. He urged employers to join the extension, maintain higher wages and shorter hours, and continue codes making progress while many workers remain out of work. The Blue Eagle symbol was to remain in use during the extension.

Cotton Ginnings Up Slightly for Year

The census bureau reports that by December 13 this year 12,356,769 running bales of cotton had been ginned, plus 568,090 round bales and 5,151 American Egyptian bales. Last year at the same date ginnings were 12,081,404 running bales with 622,016 round bales and 6,680 Egyptian. State tallies show Texas leading with 4,115,989 bales, Alabama 947,537, Georgia 1,184,740, Mississippi 1,126,707, Oklahoma 1,196,295, North Carolina 674,254, and others.

Government Keeps Gold Price At 34.06 An Ounce

The U S government again offers 34.06 dollars per ounce for newly mined domestic gold. The figure was reaffirmed after a White House conference with Acting Secretary Morgenthau Professor George Warren and Earle Bailie. No change in the gold program was indicated. Sterling opened at 5 14 1 2 to the pound in London with bar gold at 32 59 ounce. The dollar strengthened in early trading.

War in Chaco jungle ends as armistice holds

In the Gran Chaco between Bolivia and Paraguay the fighting ceased at midnight after the armistice. Paraguayan forces, buoyed by a fortnight of gains, advanced to the wedge’s end but were told to halt pending orders. Bolivian detachments retreated or moved scattered in the jungle heat.

Potter County Men Grven Yale Pardons

Governor Ferguson issued four conditional pardons and one general parole to Potter County men. Richard Smith and Cal Davis received pardons for robbery and liquor law convictions. W. F. Mapes had a reduced fine from 400 to 25 dollars under Medical Practice Act violation. E. V. Allen and Otis J. Foster received ninety-day furloughs for burglary, robbery, and firearms offenses.

Christmas Is Certain For Needy Families In Amarillo

The Christmas Center committee in Amarillo at 1017 Polk Street will adopt at least 100 needy families this Christmas. The center lists each family with members and addresses and asks only small gifts and visits on Christmas Eve or Day. Mrs Irene Finley directs the office which will stay open nightly until 8 o clock this week.

Blaze Fatal As Hotel Burns In Lone Oak

Two people died when the McBride Hotel burned at Lone Oak, 14 miles southeast of Greenville. Six occupants were in the building. two jumped to escape, four injured. Fire started from an oil burner left on in the ground floor cafe.

City Commission Supports Widening Fillmore Street Plans

The city commission voted to cooperate with the state highway department to widen Fillmore Street and Thirty-Sixth Avenue. The project would expand the street to 30 feet on Thirty-Sixth Avenue from Harrison Street west to the city limits and add five foot shoulders. Through traffic would then move in a straight line from North East Eighth Avenue to Thirty-Sixth Avenue, easing business district congestion. Resolutions also authorize widening North East Eighth Avenue to the city limits and other streets widened under the national recovery act.

Slayer of Singer Snatched From Mob

In San Francisco on December 20 a young radio singer Emilia da Prata 26 was slain by Umberto Giusti 35 who had been her rejected lover. Giusti was held for arraignment on murder charges as crowds demanded justice. Da Prata was bound for a New York tryout with the Metropolitan Opera Company and had attracted national attention including a presidential audience.
