Kansan fugitive Wilbur Underhill escaped from a posse at the George Nash home five miles south of Konawa Oklahoma as officers watched. He fled in an automobile when a back yard chase drew blank and was only partly clothed. The posse sought Underhill over the Coalgate bank robbery with four thousand dollars taken. Houston Nash and Brave Brady were later arrested at the Nash residence.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau urged drastic changes to the income tax system before the Ways and Means Committee. Highlights include a single rate with exemptions for dependents, retention of capital gains tax, elimination of depreciation, and a lower rate on earned income under 25,000. He signaled a likely gain near 100 million dollars.
A gas main explosion in Chicago's north side injured four seriously and caused over 1 million dollars in damage. A match ignited in a basement sparked the blast, with follow up explosions for about twenty minutes. Mains were hurled to the street as flames rose, prompting mass evacuation. Marshall Texas December 15 Jack Powell 20 died and nine Texarkana College football followers were injured when twelve cars derailed east of Jefferson. The wreck caused by a broken flange halted traffic for hours. most seriously hurt were Jack Mills 18 Johnnie Clark 18 and Jack Davies 16 all with leg injuries.

Three year old Ernest Rippe darted onto a subway with his eighty year old grandfather Louis Rippe in pursuit of Santa Claus. A train ride separated them and police found the boy hours later with chocolate smeared on his face. The boy asked to see Santa Claus with his grandfather, but his mother intervened promising the trip next Monday without the elder man.
Sumner Welles arrived in Washington from Havana where he had been U S ambassador to Cuba. He resumes duties at the State Department as assistant secretary of state effective immediately.
Potter County wheat allotment checks totaling 43000 face delay as a protest by Fred Bone R E Hanson and Jack Swann questions the average on their joint application. Carl Hill dismisses the protest as unjustified while Washington is urged to uphold the committee. Nearby counties including Wheeler Deaf Smith Hale and Hansford are set to receive payments this week with final April payments.
In Barryton Michigan on December 15 a five room addition to Fork Township Agricultural School collapsed seconds after 100 students exited. Two children suffered minor steam burns as 50 CWA laborers escaped unharmed. Superintendent John Chodwin warned teachers to evacuate as walls cracked and fell.

Representative O Connor of New York accuses the whisky trust of aiming to seize 500 million dollars in profits from blended whiskies in six months. He claims 75 to 90 percent of the industry is controlled by the trust and cites foreign funds backing a Peoria plant, urging a public boycott of high priced liquor.
Partially disabled veterans are urged to register for census work with Floyd Sloan adjutant of Hanson Post American Legion. Registration is at 1 30 o clock Saturday afternoon at the Legion Home office for those seeking CWA census employment in the city.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh arrived at 10 40 AM in Santo Domingo en route home after a 210 mile hop from San Juan Puerto Rico. They will stay until tomorrow and continue toward Miami and homeward, completing a 25000 mile aerial tour begun July 9 from New York.
Fire engulfed the Don Fernando Hotel in Taos New Mexico early today reducing the building to ashes. The blaze spread to several structures around the plaza causing extensive damage. Early estimates set the loss at about 150000 dollars and the hotel housed numerous nationally known paintings.
The Associated Press recalls the sail wagon a real prairie schooner used in 1888 by a sailor named Wallace to run between Hereford in Deaf Smith County and Washburn near Amarillo. Amarillo merchant Jor Killough and historian Ernest C. Shearer recount its wind powered travel and fast pace before night calms forced overnight stops on the plains.
