The seizure recalls a year old find of 2000 machine guns in box cars at St Gotthard and highlights a treaty of Trianon restriction on arms shipments to Hungary.
Herbert Hoover received a warm welcome in Buenos Aires the first South American capital on his eastern coast tour. He praised Argentina's progress as security teams and troops surrounded his party to preempt any incident after prior arrests and map seizures.
A Texas commercial aviator said he refused an offer of 10 900 to fly narcotics valued at about 125 000 from Mexico over the Rio Grande into San Antonio. He described an intelligent, businesslike man who proposed fueling in Mexico and returning with a passenger carrying a bag of drugs. The flyer, a former World War I instructor, would have received the remaining 10 000 after delivering the passenger. He did not inform San Antonio authorities.
United Press reports Henry Ford, Dec. 14, predicts air travel will mirror auto adoption in a decade with no practical limit on airplane size. He envisions moving away from flivvers to larger ships, exploring dirigible airplane hybrids, oil burning engines, and air lanes to ease congestion. Ford notes plans to build huge 25 to 30 passenger planes and temporary pause on small flivver models.
Travelers from Jalisco report that insurgents raided Jilotepec, Mexico, abducting twenty two of the town’s prettiest young women as federal troops pursue the raiders. The group looted homes and encircled a motion picture theater before taking the captives into the mountains.
Amarillo hosts a poultry show at the Municipal Auditorium featuring 500 chickens and turkeys on display. The event highlights the elite birds by color and breed, with vivid descriptions of white cocks and iridescent black chickens, while pigeons and rabbits accompany the showcase. Galveston Texas December report says steam and explosives will be used to quench flames from the Marrs McLean Cache well at High Island. Nolan McKellip, accused in the Avritt kidnapping, was arrested in New Orleans but a grand jury in Amarillo returned no bill. Sheriff Pollard notified authorities that McKellip is not wanted here, while Orville Benton testified twice and Avritt did not appear. Avritt recounted captivity, and the car used to flee Amarillo was recovered in Corpus Christi.
The trial of W Ray Adams, a Bartlett farmer, for the slaying of Orville L Mathews, a Dallas bank employee, ends in deadlock after jurors report nine against acquittal and three for conviction. Illness of three jurors from influenza leads to discharge. Evidence showed a $1,000 election bet tied to the contested race between Earle RB Mayfield and Tom Connally.
Two men tried to hold up the Drayton Mill payroll in Spartanburg on December 1. Karl Belu, 30, payroll clerk, was shot in the head and likely fatally wounded during the attempt. Local police pursue leads as investigation continues.
