United Press reports swift developments in the Connie Franklin torch murder case from Mountain View Arkansas. Warden Edgar Jennings and 12 guards were held by mutinous long term convicts during a two hour riot at Auburn state prison. Troopers and National Guard troops backed by tear gas and riot weapons moved in. One convict reported killed. Over 1,500 inmates reportedly took part in the revolt.
The Railroad Commission notified six Texas railroads to equip motor cars with four crew members as the full crew law requires. The rail systems named include Missouri Pacific Gulf Colorado Santa Fe Southern Pacific Chicago Rock Island Gulf Panhandle Santa Fe and Cotton Belt. The order followed a conference with Railroad Brotherhood officials.
A city engineering department completed a new roll for proposed paving the Canyon highway tieup. The revised assessment deducts last week's state highway commission aid. The state's portion covers a nine foot strip along the entire length from Harrison street to the city limits. Copies were sent to Willmering and Mullen, the contractors, to obtain property owner approval of the new prices, and to State Highway Division Engineer P B Bailey with surfacing specs for approval in Austin.
Walter Irvin was elected commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post at last night’s annual election in the Legion Home. Zane Smith was named senior vice commander and C Applequist junior vice commander. Other officers include R Zimmerly quartermaster Judge Er C Nelson judge advocate and John Mitchell chaplain. The meeting time was changed to the second and fourth Wednesdays. Plans for the state veterans convention in the summer were discussed. Irvin will be installed January 8 and will appoint officers thereafter.
Annis Belle Chestnut, 42, of a prominent Waco family, was fatally struck by an automobile Tuesday night while crossing a street. Witnesses said the accident was unavoidable.
Clay Lester, convicted of murdering his wife Virgie, 35, faces 99 years in prison. He told reporters he would have acquitted or sent the defendant to the chair, calling the crime the most cold blooded ever heard. Trial evidence showed he punched his wife after shooting her. defense cited drugs jealousy and paranoia. The six hour jury deliberation kept Lubbock county’s record of no death penalties intact.
December 11 report on Pathe studio fire that killed four of ten victims. Four chorus girls were among the deceased amid sparks from an arc lamp igniting a rear stage velvet drape. Electrician Griggs identified a glowing carbon fragment as the probable trigger, with the technician later dying from burns.

Mrs Mary Belle Coin 24 of Sanford died in St Anthony s hospital after being burned by gasoline she used to clean clothing. She was rushed from Sanford to Amarillo then to Dallas where her body will be buried. Survived by husband Roy Leon Coin and two children Roy Leon Jr 8 and Kenneth 4, mother Mrs Frank Wilson of Dallas. Funeral arrangements by Boxwell Brothers.
Rei jiro Wakatsuki and Admiral Takarabe lead the Japanese delegation saying Japan will go far toward reducing its navy for the London disarmament conference. They arrive from Yokohama and travel to Washington to meet President Hoover before London. They defend submarines as defensive and press for sweeping cuts if practical.
United Press reports applying fault to children playing on the tracks near the Irwindale interurban wreck that injured about 20. Officials from Northern Texas Traction and Texas Electric cite rocks left on the line and a downhill grade as factors, noting a recent express car passed safely before the derailment.
Chinese revolutionaries launched fierce offensives in four areas, threatening Nanking as Chiang Kai-Shek concentrates thousands for defense. Rebels reported at Chuchow near the capital’s rail hub. Wounded were arriving in Nanking and the battle’s outcome was uncertain.
Springfield dec 11 A stay of execution was granted today to Willie Doody a pint sized bandit and gunman of Chicago who faced the electric chair for the murder of Berwyn Police Chief Charles Levy The stay delays his fate until the court rules on his appeal likely at the February or April term next year
Maurice Costello a former film idol and now veteran actor prepared to face a $166,000 breach of promise suit in superior court. Miss Vivienne Sengler, a young musician author and artist, claims they agreed to marry last April 22. Costello, father of John Barrymore and Helene Costello, says there was no such understanding and calls the suit an absurd attempt to shake him down.
A 50 year lease on the 60 by 140 foot lot at Seventh Avenue and Polk Street is signed with S. H. Kresa and Company. Property owners J. Ray and E. C. Britain say the deal, valued about 456000 dollars, will see the two-story building replaced with a modern two-story basement structure for a department store. Kay, returning from New York, concluded negotiations with Kress and Company.
A meeting of committees and interested persons in Amarillo’s Community Christmas Campaign will be held tonight at the American Legion Home Municipal Auditorium at 8 o clock. All churches lodges and civic organizations not participating are urged to send representatives. Toys and wearing apparel are received daily at Legion headquarters and distributed after repairs by Legion Auxiliary city firemen and Amarillo high school students.
James E. Naughton assistant cashier of U. S. Fidelity and Guaranty Co leaped 119 feet to the pavement from the high level bridge in Cleveland today. The death occurred in view of hundreds of motorists crossing the bridge. Ambulance details noted. Local business ads appear at end.
New York police airlifted 100 tear gas bombs to Auburn prison amid a riot. The 104th New York National Guard was ordered to Auburn by Acting Governor Lehman. Four police cars with weapons and tear gas were sent, and officers on outer beats were alerted to assist.

Assistant U S District Attorney Alex Mood was to arrive in Amarillo this afternoon to represent the government in five ex soldiers suits over war risk insurance. Plaintiffs claim total disability in service and seek $10,000 each or enough to yield $67.40 monthly for life. The Noah P. Taylor case from Amarillo may be the first to proceed this afternoon. No sessions were held this morning.
The tri-district chiropractic convention will convene next Saturday at the Herring Hotel with 75 to 80 delegates expected from the South Plains North Panhandle and Red River districts. A 19 year old Herman Riley is said to have confessed to shooting his father asleep, then killing his mother as she fled and wounding his younger brother. The statement, signed in officials presence, cites anger at his father and desire for family goods as motives. The plan was premeditated and a pistol was purchased ahead of the night of the shooting.
