Terror Rages as Allied Forces Press Toward Chosin
A Marine spokesman estimated 15 000 Marines killed about 60 000 Chinese in the Chosin Reservoir area as Allied forces push to break through the encirclement. MacArthur cited a million man Chinese invasion force with 268 000 front line troops and 550 000 in rear areas, plus 200 000 more. Chinese released 29 wounded American soldiers from the Seventh Division with a note claiming troops would return to Manchuria. The report notes ambushes, a burned convoy, camels in the campaign, and airmen’ s claims of five camels destroyed. In the Pyongyang area the Communists captured Sunchon and Sukchon while British 29th Brigade held the north of Pyongyang and parts of the American 25th in Pyongyang. An unconfirmed report said a bridge was being built across the Taedong River near Pyongyang. The Fifth and Seventh Regiments of the US First Marine Division linked up with survivors near the reservoir, though two Chinese divisions blocked coastal access. The Seventh Division drew back from the Yalu border near Hyesanjin as the South Korean Capital Division began withdrawing from the northeast tip of Korea. See WAR-Page 2.

Mardi Gras Floats Destroyed by Fire
Fire destroyed the Rex Mardi Gras parade floats and costumes in New Orleans at Calliope and Magnolia. The blaze caused about 100000 dollars in damage and sent one fireman to the hospital. Henry Sauter, 61, suffered a dislocated shoulder and back bruises from a collapsing wall. Rebuilding the floats before the February 6 carnival is unlikely.

Youth Dies When Train Hits Truck Near Umbarger
David Bauer 18 son of Mr and Mrs Wilhelm Bauer of Umbarger died from injuries after the pickup he drove was struck by a westbound Santa Fe train at a railroad crossing two miles west of Ambarger. He was taken to Deaf Smith County Hospital Hereford where he died on arrival. Born October 5 1932 in Amarillo he was a junior at Price College Amarillo and survived by his parents and maternal grandparents F J Friemel of Umbarger. He was a member of St Marys Catholic Church Umbarger and funeral services are planned See Page 2.

A traffic collision near Washburn on Highway 287 at 7:50 am killed the Stratford Church of Christ pastor Clyde Earl Min. GA and critically injured his wife Aly, along with two Stratford residents, A. B. Morris and Sigsby Brannen. Four-month-old Clyde Earl Aly Jr. survived uninjured. The Chrysler sedan struck a tree after a front tire blew out. Rescuers transported the injured to Northwest Texas Hospital. The minister and his wife had recently moved from Dallas and he had been appointed Stratford pastor in September. The Amarillo district total traffic deaths reached 90 for the year, with 97 statewide in 1949.
