Diesel locomotives promise power beyond steam iron horse
The new locomotives supply electric current to start main Diesels with a single button and provide emergency lighting for signals. Each of 36 wheels carries two sets of brakes totaling 72 brakes, operated by four air cylinders per wheel set. Water cooling keeps brakes from overheating on steep descents. A 14 car train at 100 mph can stop in about a half mile. The City of Los Angeles and City of San Francisco will ride these engines, surpassing 110 years of steam era dominance.
