Amarillo issued building permits totaling 1 509 682 as of December 1, topping last year’s total and surpassing the entire 1923 figure by 200 000. New homes lead this year’s permits, with five mercantile buildings and several dwellings also noted amid a robust fall building program.
Amarillo Ad Club luncheon at the Amarillo Hotel focused on overhead reduction. Speakers Jeff Blackburn Bill Adams and H C Cyclone Johnson urged buying less and selling more, stressing efficient sales staff. Lee Williams announced next Monday salemanship day with J Q Barnes of National Cash Registers as principal speaker.
The Ama rillo Second Hand company continues its annual expansion sale due to strong business and a large stock of furniture stoves and rugs. S H Wright, manager, announces the sale will run through December. A big drawing at 8 o clock tonight offers a free choice of any furniture piece in the two stores for the winner.
Forecast calls for fair skies tonight and tomorrow with cooler air. High today reached 54 degrees and the low dipped to 36, compared with 40 and 30 a year ago.
London reports Egypt has accepted outstanding terms after the Sirdar Sir Lee Stack’s assassination. Egypt withdraws army units from the Sudan and ends opposition to British protection of foreign interests. Troops evacuee from the Sudan and Alexandria customs house, premier Ziwar ordered calm restored as Cairo schools reopen amid reduced tension.
Funeral services for James Miles Irvin nine months old were held at 3 p m at the Irvin home 1609 Madison street with Rev T O Brien officiating. Burial followed at Llano cemetery. The Cooper Irvin motor company plant closed for the services.
Amarillo council plans the winter Boy Scout encampment at the Dolecator place in Palo Duro canyon. The camp opens December 26 and runs to January 1 with three heated buildings for sleeping quarters dining hall and kitchen. It will house thirty-five boys and the first signups at city hall’s scout headquarters will go.
The Cullum Motor Company reports a substantial Dodge Brothers price cut effective December 1. Discounts range from 10 to 160 dollars on all touring and passenger cars.
The Hanson Post No 54 American Legion will hold its monthly business meeting tomorrow night at the Legion home. Commander J C Sebaetain announced the event this morning.
Taxpayers who pay city taxes early at the Amarillo window are greeted by Miss Jewel Davidson the city secretary and tax collector. The scene describes her pleasant manner and the goodwill created as residents express thanks for early payments.
City engineer B. Jones will travel to Kansas City to present water data collected over the past week. He plans to have Kiersted verify costs for a proposed distribution line and compare various systems. Results will be shown to the water board at the next meeting, along with data from City Light and Water.
W H Batchelor reports Amarillo’s packing plant will be rebuilt with modern machinery and be operating within three months. The $200 000 facility aims to handle Panhandle hog and cattle marketing and seeks farmers and stockmen cooperation for material supplies to boost prices and profits.
The city starts laying a sewer line from the main to the packing plant east of town, remodeled by W H Batchelor with city manager and engineer officials overseeing. Work aims for completion in weeks. city covers only the within city limits portion. Senator Wesley L. Jones of Washington named Republican whip in the Senate.
In Amarillo court, two jurors were seated for the Billie Meeks murder case as ten men were questioned. Defense and state challenges, venue questions, and a $200 fine for a venireman who did not appear highlighted a day of tense proceedings before a 1:30 start for jury selection from about 70 of 85 summoned.
The Canadian Clovis division of the Southwest Trail association will meet here Friday. The Board of City Development will host a luncheon for delegates before a business meeting in its rooms. About twenty five members are expected to attend.
Lips of Clovis New Mexico is present for the trial while her brother D W Cox of Bel en New Mexico is due to arrive. Her older sister Mrs Jim Eakins from Merkle Texas may be here before the trial ends. During recesses Mrs Meeks spoke softly with her husband her attorneys and newspaper men. She wore a sand colored dress with chocolate checks and a freshly styled black bob. Her face looked colorless and she appeared nervous clutching a silk handkerchief as a small crowd watched in the courtroom.
A. L. Bridenstine of the United States Biological Survey launches a campaign to rid Potter County of prairie dogs this week. Ranchers and farmers are urged to cooperate as control will involve poison on affected lands and costs may be charged to landowners who fail to respond.
