Clarksburg reports a spree tied to Harry F Powers alias Cornelius Pierson as authorities probe further deaths of women linked to his matrimonial schemes. A second piece notes Mrs Powers funded his garage slaughterhouse and memory of his victims amid ongoing Texas cotton legislation chatter in Austin and Baton Rouge.
Arthur Brisbane discusses wartime loans and new money flows as John D. Rockefeller Jr plans a 250 million dollar New York construction program. He borrows 65 million from Metropolitan Life to back a large real estate loan, while American and French bankers grant Britain a loan amid postwar economic strain.
The Potter County commissioners awarded a lumber contract to the John Maynard Lumber Company for two cars. Bids came from Amarillo firms and the purchase will fund several county construction projects. The next regular session is set for September 14.

The city of Amarillo ends its five year contract with Panhandle Trading Company and resumes in house garbage collection. Officials estimate a 25 to 30 percent cost saving using city owned trucks tanks and drivers. Garbage is incinerated north of the city.
In Houston Montrose, oil producer C. A. Jones about 35 and his wife were found shot to death in their apartment living room just before noon. A pistol lay in an adjoining room and no blood trails connected the rooms. The woman had two wounds, the man four.
At Beverly Country Club in Chicago on August 31 Jack Westland led the National Amateur Championship first round with a 72 over par. Veteran Harrison Johnston of St Paul and ex British champion Cyril Tolley both fell back with scores of 82 and 85 while Bud McKinney of Del Rio posted 79.
Phoebe Omlie of Memphis wins the women’s division in the national sweepstake handicap derby after a 2,100 mile flight from Santa Monica to Cleveland. She achieves 109.13 percent, over Martie Bowman, with unofficially the sweepstake prize also likely to go to Omlie. Two Marines survive a midair collision during a nine-ship formation.
Police announced the gang killing case in New York is solved after a gunmen firing from a car wounded 18 year old Jennie Ballantione. The same night a later shooting wounded her thigh as authorities linked the attack to extortion threats against Joseph Santora.
Sir Hall Caine, the Isle of Man novelist, suffered a deterioration in health as physicians reported his condition very grave due to developing lung congestion after several days of illness.
Tonight Amarillo hosts the annual Autumn Style Show with window displays from Polk Street to Taylor between Fourth and Seventh Avenues. Crowds pack the streets at 7:30 PM to 9 PM as mannequins and fashion from Cinderella era to modern styles are showcased, with cash prizes offered by Globe News for participating stores.
Detroit police said Rose Veres the landlady known as a witch confessed to killing Steve Nak a 68 year old roomer at her home. Nak whose life was insured for 6800 dollars was the twelfth man to die in her house in recent years.
The annual election of directors will be held in the directors room at the Chamber of Commerce tomorrow night at 7 30 oclock. Mrs Anna Taylor secretary announced today. Charity workers will discuss the chest needs for the coming year. Officers will be elected later.
Hearing on rates charged by contract motor truck carriers opened in Austin with O D Hudnall leading the rate division of the Railroad Commission. The session applies a new truck regulation law passed by the legislature placing contract carriers under the commission.
Florence C. Hall, Oklahoma City oilman and backer of the Post Gatty flight, announced plans to start a new round the world attempt from Oklahoma City next May or June. A duplicate Winnie Mae will be flown by Frank Hoover with navigator not yet chosen. The purple white Lockheed has a 425 horsepower engine and previously averaged 150 mph to Cleveland where Hall spoke at the national air races. The route mirrors Post and Gatty except for Oklahoma City legs.
In San Antonio on August 31 union carpenters and joiners began a seven hour day five day week to curb unemployment. The executive board urged all employers to follow, arguing wage reductions during no work do not boost opportunities and harm workers' purchasing power.
The Texas Federation of Labor moved its head offices from Dallas to Austin after a vote at the recent state labor convention in El Paso.
Stephen KE Patton, 80, staged his own funeral at home near Walier in Benton Iowa. Rev John B Maulding preached a calm sermon praising Patton’s late conversion and faith. Relatives attended as flowers arrived, and Patton asked for no further funeral sermons or flowers after death.
A deathbed confession from 62 year old George R. Pond led Indiana and Illinois officials to reassess the murder case of Jesse Lucas. Lucas, serving life in Chester, Illinois, for Clyde Showalter's 26 year old death, may be freed after Pond admitted the true killer. Jury members from the 1909 conviction signed a petition for Lucas’s release.
