Governor Hinkle commuted the death sentences of Bill LaFavors and Hollis Smelcer, both Amarillo residents, to life imprisonment. They had been scheduled for execution next Friday after being convicted of first degree murder in the shooting of Sheriff Richardson in Alamogordo while being pursued on a theft charge. The news brought joy to their families and sparked renewed efforts to secure clemency.
Fire destroyed the home of J A Cheatam at Can yon ranch last night. The residence valued at several thousand dollars, origin of the blaze not reported.

Athens Texas reports the first known election day casualty from Opelika as Wiley Fowler an election judge was slashed during a political dispute Medical aid was summoned and officers left to investigate the incident.
Armstrong County voters cast 627 for J. D. Woodburn in the sheriff and tax assessor race while P. H. Lynch received 320. In clerk contests Wash Storm led Sid Mathews 422 to 417 and H. H. Kight won the tax assessor post with 481 to 326 for John Craine.
Miss Patty Deaver 19 and Miss Mina Deaver 26 sisters from Temple H Deaver Amarillo were swept from a spillway during a cloudburst near Lelia Lake. The bodies were recovered downstream as rescue efforts continued with help from locals and relatives.
Kia McCoy's defense receives funds from New York sporting figures arriving in Los Angeles. Theresa Mars, the last of nine moves, reaches the city as a special courier. A $20,000 contribution will be used to keep the Kid away from the gallows in the Wu slaying case.
The Globe announces in Friday's issue that about 300 Amarillo women with unbobbed hair visiting the office yesterday or Monday would receive a free pass to The Mission for Monday afternoon. Additional tickets will be issued to employed women unable to attend and for the night show.
In San Francisco on August 28 observers used white telescopes to study Mars as it slipped to 34,460,000 miles from Earth and began moving away again. Astronomers say the near-parallel orbital paths suggest this opposition may not mark the most favorable viewing night of the current cycle, yet telescopes and cameras remain focused on the planet to search for signs of Martians and their possible environment.
Washington, August 23. Details emerge of the blind dash through fog by American aviators. Linet Lowell Smith reports that Italian lieutenant Locatelli was separated from the group near Greenland after an iceberg damaged a pontoon strut. The three planes pressed on individually as fog and icebergs hindered search efforts.
Gen Charles G Dawes told a Maine Republican rally that he is opposed to the Ku Klux Klan describing it as contrary to the constitution and dangerous to civilization. He criticized Klansmen who take law into their own hands and aligned with Davis that the Klan has no role in this campaign.
The message praises Miriam A Ferguson of Temple Texas for repudiating the Klan as a victory that bodes well for government at state and national levels. It notes the outcome as a strong asset for John W Davis and extends congratulations.
In Potter county 8 798 voters chose Wiley Pollard for sheriff H K Stanfield for county attorney and defeated Miriam Ferguson by nearly three to one margins. Henry Ford trailed Pollard by 49 votes in a tight sheriff race. Robertson swept governor race. Moody for attorney general and other statewide offices also favored.
Mel Dwight candidate for sheriff of Childress county was found dead in his garage with a gunshot wound. He had 1,032 votes in yesterday’s primary while opponent recorded 1,235. A jury investigation is underway into the mysterious death.
The Globe issued three extras in one day at 2:30, 6:30, and 8:30 announcing a Memphis drowning tragedy, a New Mexico Supreme Court ruling on Bill La Favors, and Potter County election results including Governor Hinkle commuting LaFayors to life. Local results showed Latd and Stanfield leading with precinct returns, and Mrs. Ferguson’s support centered away from Amarillo.
Miriam Ferguson of Temple appears to have overwhelmed her opponent Felix D. Robertson of Dallas in the Democratic gubernatorial runoff primary held yesterday, based on early returns.
Tomorrow promises wonderful weather for churchgoing in Amarillo with a generally fair forecast. Yesterday’s high reached 86 compared with 81 a year ago, while the low was 63 versus 56 last year.
