Rerouting Plan Aims to Ease Amarillo Traffic and Bus Service

The plan shifts Morningside to South routes toward Taylor Street with new turns onto Tyler Polk and Taylor to spread congestion. It promises better Taylor Street bus service from Third to Tenth and removes meters in busy zones to relieve jams. Amarillo traffic plan aims for eight lane expressway

State highway official DeWitt Greer told city commissioners a six to eight million dollar eight lane Amarillo expressway is feasible if the city cooperates. The plan would create a wide right of way along Highway 66 to relieve bottlenecks and channel through traffic via an express lane system with service roads, potentially feeding in from Canyon and Dulas highways and feeding out to Dallas routes.

Probers Face Clashing Views On Hughes Inquiry

Washington Aug. 12 AP The abrupt halt to the Hughes investigation drew mixed reactions from senators. Senator Murray Montana and Senator Robertson Virginia praised probes as needed while Senator Brewster Maine said Murray seeks to blunt the war inquiry. Democrats hint at renewed Senate investigations in January.

Indian nationalist family tours United States amid independence talk

Frederic S. N. R. Shah, an Indian businessman from Calcutta, travels with his wife and two children through the United States visiting industrial plants and scenic spots. The family left New York July 26 in a Dodge sedan to study American industry as India nears formal independence recognition by the British. Price Probe Ordered by Clark on Price Increases

Attorney General Clark ordered a Justice Department anti trust probe to see if conspiracies exist to push up prices in food clothing and housing. Jail terms will be sought for violators and the inquiry follows a three month study led by Assistant Attorney General John F Sennett. The CIO Full Employment Committee urged a new session to restore price controls as wage demands keep rising.

Amarillo Police Aid Canyon in Car Case

Sheriff Cantrell of Canyon asked Amarillo police for help in arresting seven Black men and four white men transporting cars to Lubbock. The group claimed the cars were headed to a used car dealer and officials sought to determine if any cars were stolen. Police and highway patrols encountered seven cars involved.

Price Increases on Hudson Automobiles Announced

Hudson motor cars rose by 45 dollars to 85 dollars as of today. George H. Pratt, Hudson vice president in charge of sales, cited rising material and labor costs. Hudson is the fourth major maker to hike prices in two weeks, joining General Motors Packard and Kelser-Prazer with increases up to 200 dollars.

Weather Forecast For Amarillo And Vicinity

Forecast calls for scattered thundershowers and cooler temps this afternoon and tonight in Amarillo and vicinity. West Texas and New Mexico show partly cloudy skies with widely scattered storms and little temperature change. The report notes highs around 93 in Amarillo and 85 to 95 in New Mexico with rainfall data and miscellaneous printed items listed.

Charter Amendment Ballot Set For Sept 23 Election

City commissioners tentatively set September 23 for an election on charter amendments. The major change would raise the general fund tax unit from $1.30 and water works 50 cents to a total of $2.50. Another amendment would allow city limits to be extended by ordinance.
