Arthur Brisbane surveys economic distress under Hoover, noting hard times, child paralysis cases, Sears profits, and West Point links. He cites Italian emigration and typhoon relief in the Philippines as broad reflections on independence, policy and responsibility.
Miss M. V. Goolsby a 26 year old Amarillo nurse died when the car she drove skidded on a wet road near Quanah. Her sisters Dixie 13 and Myrtle 18 were injured but not seriously. Goolsby lived at 1604 Tyler Street and worked at St Anthony hospital. Funeral arrangements are set with Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. A car was sent to Quanah to bring the body to Amarillo.
Maj. James H. Doolittle has announced his return to competition in the Thompson Trophy race during the national air races in Cleveland from August 29 to September 7. His wife had said he would retire, but he insists on racing this year.
Danish naval flying boats and Island and Falk scoured the North Sea for Parker Cramer and Oliver Pacquette after a forced wave landing and a storm. Weather hampered flight operations and no clues were found as the pair, who left Detroit for a route to Europe, were last heard near Copenhagen.
Charles A Lindbergh and his wife landed on the Seward Peninsula coast while en route from Point Barrow to Nome. Dense fog forced a landing about 75 miles from Nome after a 23 mile hop from Point Barrow. The couple indicated all was well and radio contact confirmed the landing.
Radio's latest developments are incorporated in the New General Motors Radio, distributed by Nunn Electric Co. Griggs ambulance contact phone 4311.
The Coast Guard cutter Biboco recovered an exhausted pilot and a damaged airplane named Lenpira near Lookout Light off Cape Hatteras. The vessel, on a Savannah to New York run, could not identify the flyer due to exhaustion, and weather hindered further radio contact with the Charleston Navy Yard.
The recovered man is believed to be Capt. Li sandro Garay, who was flying a non-stop New York to Tegucigalpa mission aboard the Lem pira. The incident occurred near Cape Hatteras as Garay’s aircraft sustained damage during the flight.
Senator Blaine of Wisconsin urged President Hoover in a letter to convene a special session of Congress in early September to address unemployment relief. The note cited continued unemployment eroding purchasing power and low farm prices as pressing issues.
Potter County commissioners will fix the tax rate this Saturday after Monday’s session that disposed of claim matters and minor county business. Court sessions were postponed until Saturday. Berry's rug cleaning listed as a local business at 905 W 10th.
Washington reports a secrecy bound group defending a large cotton crop forecast after criticism and a possible senatorial inquiry. W. F. Callander of the crop reporting board asserts records are open and the 1931 crop is likely as large as estimated. A Connally request to preserve records for a possible investigation was referred to Callander.
Open bidding heats up for Gov. William H. Murray as Louisiana raises Texas price with a telegram offering to donate the governor and provide 2,000,000 barrels of oil and 1,000 bales of cotton. The Texas quote had offered Gov. Ross Sterling and 1,000,000 barrels of oil to boot.
The Texas Senate passes the Greer redistricting bill creating new districts for East West and South Texas to gain three additional congressmen. It keeps the Purl bill from advancing and delays broader action as the session nears its end.
Bergen Norway Aug 11 Hopes of binding American fliers Cramer and Pacquette faded as three naval seaplanes returned from hours of search along the southwest coastline without finding their missing plane.
Two Danish flying boats arrived at North Jutland to refuel and continue the search for Parker Cramer and Oliver Pacquette, missing since last Sunday. The pilots reported no trace of the American plane but will extend the search along the west coast as far as Esbjerg.
Joe West a 77 year old Hunt County farmer was killed in Royse City when a burglar fired as he turned for a gun. James Williams 24 year old negro confessed to Rockwell and Hunt County officers that he killed West during the burglary. West's wife identified the intruder as a former worker who knew where money was kept. Police arrested a negro hiding near the Hunt Rockwell border and moved to Dallas amid fears of mob action.
The Cushing Gasoline and Refining Company offered to pay $1 a barrel for a limited quantity of crude oil from the Blackwell Oil and Gas Company and the Jones Brothers properties in the Oklahoma City field. E. O. Derrick, sales manager, announced the bid. The company operates refineries at Cushing with 4,500 barrels daily capacity and at Blackwell with 1,800 barrels daily.
In Ypsilanti Michigan a charred car held the badly burned bodies of two Cleveland girls and two local youths. The victims Vivian Gold and Anna Harris both 15 and 17 from Cleveland, Harry Love 18 and Thomas Wheatley 16 of Ypsilanti, were last seen leaving a movie together. Police report robbery and assault with the car set ablaze. Evidence of a violent struggle and bloodstained earth found at the scene.
Forty head of horses from Grout and Ellis Panhandle Lindsay Nunn and Jim Hamilton stables will compete at the second annual Mid-Summer Horse Show at the Tri-State Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday. Lights totaling 27 500 watts will illuminate the ring while admission ranges from 50 cents to 1 50 with box seats sold out or nearly. Weather is forecast fair for both nights and 25 percent of earnings go to prize funds.
Ground was broken for a new 1.245 million dollar Fort Worth post office. Two hundred workers will be employed, and the building is expected to be completed by fall 1932.

Reports from Havana say rebel and loyal forces clash near the capital with ten dead. President Machado signs a decree suspending constitutional guarantees and a state of siege remains in Havana and Pinar del Rio. The yacht Cowl was captured by the Cuban gunboat Baire and taken toward Havana, with Menocal believed to be aboard another vessel.
The submarine Nautilus, on a North Pole under the ice expedition led by Sir Hubert Wilkins, is reported adrift in Arctic seas with unreparable engine trouble. A motorboat from Tromsø has gone to assist as fears grow it may be driven ashore by strong currents.
Potter County court at law waits for the Potter County Commissioners Court to complete its meeting. Judge E C Nel gon presides as judgments by default and non jury cases are being considered.
Five governors Sterling Texas Murray Oklahoma Woodring Kansas Long Louisiana and Parnell Arkansas were invited to address oil operators in Tyler Texas on Friday. The meeting aims to discuss a probable shutdown of the giant East Texas field to push crude prices back up. Arrangements were made to welcome virtually all interested operators.

Frances Loving, 59, longtime Amarillo resident, died in Tulsa at her daughter’s home after a period of ill health and pneumonia. Funeral services are planned in Tulsa on Thursday. Known in Amarillo, she had spent recent years with her daughter Mrs. Robert Briggs.

Mayor Er nest O. Thompson challenged telephone rates in Amarillo saying rates never were legally established and urging payment of franchise rates. He sent a letter to G N Hailey, with the issue referred to Southwestern Bell officials in Fort Worth. The 1926 city commission resolution set rates from 1.25 to 2. per month, but current charges range from 2.25 to 7. The mayor claims the company must prove rates are fair and that the 1926 resolution governs.
The Nome radio station contacted the Lindbergh plane today reporting it was down on the northern coast of Seward Peninsula about 109 miles from Nome. The pilot said river landing at Nome via Snake River was acceptable while sea landing was unsafe. Naval radios in Alaska relayed the message to Bremerton, noting earlier Barrow could not hear Nome.
Fort Worth Texas August 11 The 113 mile Childress Pampa extension of the Fort Worth and Denver Northern railway will be completed for hauling 1932 crops. R C Gowdy Denver chief engineer announced bids on the line's construction. He estimated up to 706 workers will be employed and the project will cost about 4 million dollars.
