Washington reports say drought damage remains extensive with no clear end in sight and a continued gloomy forecast. Officials discuss relief plans including credit for cattle feed and a county by county survey to gauge aid needs for winter, while disease dangers from drought are noted.
Two boa constrictors wandered through a Houston residential district and 33 were captured. Fred B. Waddell brought five snakes from Sonora Mexico. They measured eight feet and were placed in a chicken wire pen. One was found in a neighbor’s chicken coop with a chicken in its coils. Another was discovered in a nearby garage with company. She had added 31 constrictors to the lot.
Amarillo attorney A D Payne, who confessed to plotting his wife Verona Thompson's death with explosive devices, signals no defense and urges expedited sentencing. Potter County grand jury convenes August 25, with indictment possible that day or next. trial likely in September and execution possibly in October if convicted. Payne recalled his long confession in court, describing the murder as the "most terrible crime," while showing little remorse beyond concern for his 11 year old son.
A half million troops were mobilized by Gen. Feng Yu-Hsiang and Gen. Totals ranged from one quarter inch to over three quarters inch in places like Lubbock Floydada Clovis Portales and around Plainview Snyder with some areas seeing heavier downpours. Cotton and feed crops are expected to benefit while north of Amarillo saw little rain. Unsettled skies and local showers were forecast to continue.
A 1,000 strong mob stormed the Grant County jail in Marion Indiana and hanged Thomas Shipp 18 and Abe Smith 19 after breaking through jail defenses and forcing officers from the cells. Police and state troops protected order with Gov Leslie ready to recall the National Guard if needed.
A flood sweeping Nogales and Nogales Sonora left four known dead, 13 missing, and 500 homes uninhabitable as searches resumed amid renewed storms. Mayor Villasenor put preliminary losses at 175000 dollars in Sonora and 25000 on the American side with adobe structures most vulnerable. Shops on International Street suffered heavy damage.
James D. Phelan 69, San Francisco financier and former state senator, died after several months illness. AP report from San Jose notes his death occurred yesterday with funeral plans not disclosed.
Los Angeles August 8 Captain Frank M Hawks postponed his planned return flight aimed at breaking Lindbergh’s West East record after a court order was served by his divorced wife Mrs Newell Waugh. The order requires him to appear in court to show cause for unpaid alimony totaling 10 635 69 dollars awarded months ago. Hawks had set a New York to Los Angeles speed record Wednesday and sought to restart Sunday.
Santa Fe passenger train No. 8 traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago broke through a rain-weakened bridge ten miles west of Joseph City Arizona last night. Engineer R. E. Bixby was killed and fireman Morris B. Burney was missing, bodies recovered for Bixby but Burney not located. no passengers reported hurt.
Captain B H Griffin of Oklahoma City with three passengers took off at 8 40 am from Municipal Field in the Colorado Springs air derby in a six place Cex sena plane. Passengers included R McClure M Miller and Mrs Ralph Sprague. Griffin was checked out by Dee Graham of the 8 A T flying service. BLAST KILLS DRILLER
Oklahoma City Aug. and Oklahoma voters heard Alfalfa Bill Murray, back in politics after an abortive Bolivian colony project, warn Altus crowds that impeachment attempts while he is governor would be like jackrabbits pulling a wildcat from its nest. He leads the crowded Democratic gubernatorial field ahead of next Tuesday's second primary against Frank Buttram, who charges Murray’s Bolivia absence may bar him constitutionally from the governorship. Oklahoma has a history of impeachment debates with Governors Walton and Johnston ousted and Robertson failing to be adopted.
The A. D. Payne family prepares to scatter as three children depart. Robbie Jean, 9, leaves for Lavington with grandparents, while 11 year old A. D. and 12 year old LaDell go with Uncle Sid near Tulsa. Neighbors bid farewell as the family’s home on Fountain Avenue begins a somber new chapter.
