Eldores Taylor a nine year old who started a $75,000 lumber yard blaze in Duncan Oklahoma was committed by County Judge John W Scott to the Boys Training School at Pauls Valley He said he was after chain stores but gave no reason Four other fires he set damaged chain stores but none as serious as the Long Bell Lumber yard case
A. D. Payne will not face trial until the regular criminal term in Amarillo opens August 25. Canyon officials cited a heavy docket, uncertainty of a special session, and the two week gap before the Amarillo term as reasons to postpone. The grand jury will convene first, with Payne as the initial defendant. Payne’s Tulsa-based attorney brother, Sid Payne, expected to arrive to confer on defense.
Thirteen people were injured and one man killed in a string of weekend automobile crashes near Amarillo starting Sunday morning. Bill Trout 23 of Berger died when his car collided with Jess Harrison of Plainview.
Amarillo public schools will open September 8 for the 1930 31 session per W A McIntosh superintendent of schools. Classification of students in senior and junior high will begin September 1 with principals returning a week earlier for preparations. Summer school ended last Friday with higher passing rates. students completing courses receive half a year credit. R B Norman led high school grades. Ethel Jackson oversaw the Tyler School building.
An entertainment committee for the Women’s Air Derby reception will be appointed by the Chamber of Commerce. The famous women fliers arrive August 21 about 3 PM and fly again August 22 between 9 and 10 AM. Harold English will dedicate his new port during ceremonies. Amarillo puts up 1000 dollars for the event with 18 entrants and convoying officials and observers.
Oklahoma City Aug 11 Democrats prepare for run off primary polls to nominate their gubernatorial candidate between Frank Buttram and Alfalfa Bill Murray. Senate nominees include William J Gore Charles Wrightsman and others as they seek to challenge Republican W B Pine and independents led by Jack Walton.

A Rhodes Jennings Department Store balcony collapsed during a $1 sale in Memphis injuring at least 35 shoppers including children. The Ross Sterling campaign will hold a rally at Amarillo Municipal Auditorium Wednesday night with Sterling speaking at eight. Senator Pink Parrish or Senator Walter Woodward may introduce him as part of a Panhandle push. Sterling travels from Wichita Falls to Memphis and Clarendon before Amarillo.
Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine staged a near record endurance flight above St Louis with 504 hours aloft and a smooth running motor. If continued, they would break the 654 hour mark set by the Hunter brothers in Chicago last month.
An epidemic of petty burglaries hit Amarillo over the weekend costing merchants over $1,000 in cash and property. Harman Motor Company at 1009 Polk Street reported about $100 in cash lost and a $200 cash register smashed Sunday night. Brown Cracker & Candy Company incurred about $200 in cash losses.
Plains Wholesale Grocery, City Drug Store No 2, and Fox Drug Store No 2 were entered but burglars fled without loot after ransacking cash drawers. Warman robbery occurred Sunday night with thieves scaring off before obtaining merchandise. See ROBBERY Page 2.
Two women leaders of a communist camp housing about 100 children were charged with treason for allegedly refusing the American flag. Clashes erupted as Ku Klux Klan and a group claiming to be American Legion members tried to raise the flag, leading to raids, removal of a soviet emblem, and the women’s escort to a justice of the peace. Mahel Hkan and Aliene Holmes of New York City were arrested.
Air strikes and arson rage across coal regions and timberlands as reports describe an orange monoplane dropping bombs near Providence Kentucky and multiple fires in Michigan near Menominee and Sault Ste. Marie. Authorities consider further action as tremors of fear spread through mining towns.
Four youths died when their car crashed into a parked machine on a bridge over the North Fork of Red River in Sayre Oklahoma. Victims were John Hartman Winona Moreland Ralph Hartman and Grace Dees. County investigates as Booker Waddell owner of the car sees his two children bruised.
The vine covered bungalow at 6711 Fountain Terrace in the Country Club district has become Amarillo’s top curiosity since June 27 when Mrs. Exa Payne was killed by dynamite. Crowds and traffic flood Fountain Street as visitors, guided by residents, ask where the Payne house is and why. The house sits deserted with blinds drawn as relatives remain away from the crowd.
Hillcrest Golf and Country Club won the team trophy at the Panhandle Amateur Golf tournament, with Amarillo Country Club runner up. Mansel Merriman led all players with 282 for 72 holes, while Elliott Hatch and G W Dodd followed. Debates over whether a ball on No 13 was lost may affect Dodd’s score. Berger won the Chamber of Commerce cup for out of town entrants with 21 players. Awards were announced at the Hillcrest clubhouse.
