In Burnet on August 7 volunteers fought a major cedar brake fire that blackened an area 6 miles by 15 miles along the Llano Burnet highway. Officials said the blaze likely started from a discarded cigarette or match. No cattle were harmed and homes were saved by backfiring. The wind kept the flames from Burnet itself as smoke rose and dimmed the sun.
Four Texas lawmakers urged State Sen. James Taylor to resign after he accepted a full time public relations post with the Texas Manufacturers Association. Taylor defended his stance saying he will remain in the Senate, while critics accuse the move of creating a conflict of interest.
