Attlee told Parliament Britain would cut American purchases and foreign aid, curb hotel meals, restrict remittance for films, and withdraw overseas troops by December and March. He insisted the nation must rebuild economy and stand independently without further American aid toward recovery of the old world.
Howard Hughes testified under oath that Senator Brewster of Maine proposed dropping the war contracts inquiry if Hughes would approve a merger of TWA with Pan American Airways. Brewster denied the charge, calling it Hollywood propaganda, and insisted he never made such an offer.

In Goshen New York on August 6 a section of temporary bleachers collapsed during the Mambletonian trotting Stakes injuring 33 people. The Goshen Hospital said 33 received first aid, with a crowd of 20 000 plus present. Injured were taken by ambulance and private car for treatment.
Galveston and Port Arthur were designated off limits for ships with ammonium nitrate fertilizer cargoes by a directive from the Eighth Coast Guard District. Comdr H F Cobb said higher authorities urged cessation of transport and handling of the explosive compound after waterfront disasters at Texas City and Brest.

A decision is expected tomorrow after the 10:30 a.m. meeting in city hall called by Mayor Lawrence Hagg. The commission also shelved bids for Memorial Park shelter buildings and a wading pool amid high cost estimates and plans to cut corners.
In Talladega Alabama a church collection plate went missing and a hat was passed through the auditorium provoking red faces and suppressed giggles. A pasted identity card inside read Like hell it's yours Put it back indicating the hat belonged to someone else.

Homer New, taxi driver for Yellow Cab, reported a bright colored flying saucer skimmed his chin in the 400 block on North Fillmore. He described it as bucket-lid sized and rapidly disappeared after crossing the window. He said it scared him and he could not describe its appearance.
President Truman vetoed a bill to establish a National Science Foundation saying it departs from sound principles and is too complex and unwieldy to promote government research. The measure would have created an independent agency to drive basic research and education across sciences and defense.

President Truman accepted an invitation to visit Brazil for a three day stay in Rio de Janeiro in late August or September. He will fly there aboard the battleship Missouri and return to the United States after the trip. Press Secretary Ross declined to comment on whether he will address the opening of the security conference.
