Woman Home: First Year on Tule Lake Farm
Eleanor Bolesta, a 25 year old ex-WAVE and first woman among 86 Tule Lake homesteaders, along with her husband Chuck, turn 113 acres of reclaimed lake bottom into a working farm. They adapted from zero farming experience to planting potatoes and harvesting a barley crop while raising daughter Peggy Jane. The couple navigated Bureau of Reclamation requirements and relied on neighbors for equipment as they moved from relocation barracks to a working homestead.
