Arthur Brisbane surveys turmoil in the Balkans and global affairs. He mocks Professor Coryllos on U S intervention while noting earthquakes in Mexico and financial debates on gold, taxes, and book pricing. He praises Mellon’s service and cites Monte Carlo bets as cautionary entertainment.
Members of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers association voted to ship cattle on a cooperative marketing basis. Cattle will be pooled and marketed through the National Live stock Producers association of Chicago following a San Antonio meeting that included president Richard Kleberg and Chicago association head C. B. Denman. Numerous Texas ranchers and officials attended.
Tonight and Saturday look unsettled with rain likely in places. Temperatures reach 65 today and 88 at peak, with warmer conditions inland. West Texas and Oklahoma see clouds and showers tonight through Saturday, Arkansas also cloudy with scattered showers and rising temperatures.
In Texas near Fairfield Freestone county a moonshine raid ends in the death of Special Ranger Kim Willard. Wounded Willard fired at the attacker before dying. A father and two sons are arrested nearby by Freestone sheriff deputies and Teague city officers.
The Bremen relief mission launches from Lake Ste. Agne s Quebec area as German and Irish crews prepare for a round trip to Germany. Ford tri motor ships carry supplies to the stranded Bremen crew at Greenly Island and await spare parts. The effort aims to outfit planes with skis for an ice landing and follows news reels of the damaged Bremen.
Mrs. Mary Gallais of St. Louis files suit in Tulsa asking monthly income from $50,000 in government bonds given to her daughter on March 31, 1922. She seeks payments from the Exchange Trust Company and heirs of the daughter's estate after Blanche Gallais Barry’s death in a Chicago train wreck in December 1927.
Felix Robertson, last surviving Confederate general, died at his Waco home at 11 30 this morning. The death was reported by local sources and Griggs ambulance was listed with contact details.
United Press reports that Democrats from six states pledged a united New England delegation for Alfred E. Smith of New York at two Boston rallies. Senator David I. Walsh of Massachusetts said support for Smith in the West was spreading like a prairie fire.
T. M. Bruner remains convalescent at his home 2408 Hughes Street. He is not entirely out of danger but is rapidly improving and may soon be more active.
In Springfield on April 20 the Illinois Republican convention is expected to unanimously endorse former governor Frank O Lowden as their presidential candidate with U S Senator Charles B Deneen and Louis L Emmerson leading the Lowden faction. The Democratic convention backs Governor Al Smith and likely anti prohibition plank with Emmerson and Justice Floyd E Thompson delivering keynote addresses.
In southeastern Bulgaria a string of earthquakes left Philippopolis and districts devastated. More than 1000 bodies were counted with uncertain casualty totals as residents fled. Churches hospitals collapsed and villages were left in ruins amid panic and destitution.
Oklahoma Governor Henry Johnston faces a public feud with the WCTU after a controversial letter accusing anti administration forces emerged. WCTU leaders deny Bolen and Lemans involvement while Johnston claims sabotagingdictated the letter.
Hollywood April 20. Delores del Rio plans to file for divorce from Jaime Martinez del Rio in Nogales Sonora. The couple married April 11, 1981, seven years ago this month. Incompatibility cited. suit not expected to be contested. Del Rio is moving toward Mexico with husband residing in New York where he writes.
Problems facing the average rotary club are to be discussed at the forty fifth district annual conference in Lubbock, with politics shaping the race for district governor as Rufus Wright Arthur Keys and Dr Rue Parcells seek support. Ray J Knoeppel will deliver a World Wide Rotary address as delegates plan a visit to Carlsbad Caverns after a buffet supper and dance.
A 60 mile wind storm fanned fires through Long Island and New Jersey causing widespread destruction. Fire swept through Westchester County and other areas, with up to 75 000 acres of timber burned and skies lit for miles in Southern New Jersey.
United Press dispatches from Peking and Shanghai report Nationalist armies advancing toward Peking with large-scale battles in Shantung. Estimates claim hundreds of thousands involved, with Sun Chuan-fang's defenses faltering and Chiang Kai-Shek's forces sweeping Shantung. Japanese troops move to protect civilians as reports of mass casualties and prisoner captures emerge.
