The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals at Austin affirms the death sentence of Robert Blake for the murder of Fred Connor, a Tulia motor car dealer, in a case arising from the July 17 1925 slaying. Connor’s body was found near Hale Center after an assault and shooting during a return trip from Baird. Blake had been jailed in Plainview pending appeal.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed Joe Minor’s 99 year murder sentence for the 1924 chloroforming death of George Wyatt in Hopkins county. The court remanded to Hunt county after withdrawing its earlier affirmance due to prejudicial county attorney arguments.
A Plainview incident ends with a billfold containing several checks recovered from a lake. Panhandle officers promptly use a dragnet on the South Plains as tension rises and a response unfolds.
Bishop James Edward Dickey, 63, of the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church South, died in Louisville after an appendicitis operation. He served Kentucky, Illinois, West Virginia, and Texas and New Mexico, was bishop since 1922, and led Emory College thirteen years as president before his episcopacy. He was born in 1864 in Jeffersonville Georgia and survived by his wife Jessie Monroe Dickey, a son James F. E. Dickey Jr., and several daughters.
Relatives learned today that Mr. Fain, prominent Oklahoma City attorney and former U S Senator, died this morning in a Los Angeles sanitarium. John Fain and his wife visited his bedside about two weeks ago after he had been in California for months seeking health relief.
Thirteen cars derailed and smashed when Fort Worth and Denver freight train No. 50 ran off the rails six miles north of Amarillo at 3:50 this morning. About 200 hogs were released, some killed, with crews and passengers affected as delays hit southbound No. 2. Rescue crews dispatched from Amarillo and Childress worked to clear the line, with recovery of hogs and merchandise to follow.
The National Republican club, in executive session, tabled a majority report advocating repeal of the eighteenth amendment and a minority report urging defeat of the majority. The 124 to 88 vote followed three hours of debate, with Richard W. Lawrence leading critics of the majority. Governors and prominent leaders, including Coolidge Hoover Curtis Smith, were cited in the discussion on prohibition.
United Press reports the Scott hotel in Holdenville was gutted by fire at 7 a m. Occupants escaped unharmed. R L and G J Queen of Okemah escaped injury when a shed collapsed as they left via the fire escape. Loss estimated at 15000 dollars. The three story lime stone building stood near Griggs ambulance and Blackburn ambulances.
City detectives removed ties from the tracks near Vinson south of Austin and arrested two men on charges of attempting to wreck a passenger train Rex Fowler detective filed complaints in Justice court. Earlier, two freight trains were similarly tampered with and the next trains blocked included the Sunshine Special and the Texas Special trains.
Presbyterians from Northwest Texas gather in Plainview for the Amarillo Presbytery session spanning 40 counties. Judge J W Crudgington delivers the principal address as retiring moderator, with Danes J H Davies and J W Crudgington as official delegates from Central Presbyterian Church. The session opens at 1 30 pm and discusses dividing the presbytery, potentially creating the Wichita Falls Presbytery.
Democratic nominees for state offices won a sweeping victory in Louisiana’s general election as Republicans ran a full slate for the first time since Reconstruction. Returns showed overwhelming Democratic support in New Orleans and scattered statewide results.
Four children of Denton Tennant perished when fire swept their home in McIlroy Creek near Sisterville. Vonda eight Brooks ten Garnet seven and Betty Lee three died trapped in bedrooms. Two older brothers escaped with burns as parents fled upstairs. In Maine, three Parley children died when Harold Parley’s home burned.
One man identified as Henry Killen and another as Jack Smith were arrested on the Panhandle highway near Ridgemere addition. The Chrysler 70 sedan they rode in appeared stolen. Both men fled from the courthouse yard, shots were fired, Killen was captured at the station, Smith eluded deputies after a chase through Fillmore and Fort Worth and Denver depot.
Two of five inmates held for transport to Huntsville escaped last night in Coleman Texas. Clyde Blair two year forgery sentence and D A Davenport four year burglary sentence escaped by sawing through a window bar. John Maynard Lumber Co Fifth and Jefferson advertises cash prices.
Mise Nell Willhite of South Dakota, daughter of a rancher, becomes the school’s 19th graduate and 15th nominee. She completed her first solo flight after one hour of instruction and plans a passenger service between Pierre and Rapid City.
Dallas business leaders propose moving Baylor university to a 600 to 1,000 acre site with 1.5 million dollars in cash, in a bid announced by Cullen J. Thomas and Carl P. Collings. The offer will be reviewed by the Baptist educational commission and then the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
In New Jersey a confession to the Hell-Mille murders was reported from Elwin F. Allen, jailed on burglary charges in Canadian County, Oklahoma. Sheriff Shacklett cautioned about sincerity and did not release detail.
Delegates at the Thirteenth Annual Texas Federation of Music Clubs meeting endorsed creating a state conservatory of music in Texas. William B. Jones urged the need for local access to instruction, noting many Texans travel to Chicago and New York for quality teaching. The motion to submit the idea to the resolutions committee passed amid enthusiastic response.
