General Douglas MacArthur arrives in Honolulu for a homeland visit to defend his record as Far East commander after 14 years away. His wife accompanies him with their party as the ousted US and United Nations commander faces scrutiny.
Gen Douglas MacArthur travels from Hawaii to San Francisco for a triumphant arrival marked by anticipated crowds of up to 100000 along a 16 mile route. Police expect heavy security and landmark celebrations with searchlights and government officials ready to greet him at the airport.
The Texas Baptist Sunday School convention convened with sectional meetings on elementary youth and adult work in the Sunday school. Afternoon sessions include 15 department conferences on library architecture music and records at First Baptist Church and Polk Street Methodist Church. A Danish freighter reported an oil slick in the search area as British, French and American warships search a 1,900 mile rectangle near the Isle of Wight and Cherbourg. The admiralty ordered an immediate investigation while signaling possible disaster and salvage ships prepared to assist once the sub is located.
Police traced a blood trail from Maddox Drug Store at Fifth and Taylor to a nearby hotel room, arresting William Logan Kouitz 41. The store front door was smashed and about 10 pints of whiskey were taken. Kouitz had a lacerated right hand and faced burglary charges.
Allied United Nations forces mounted a general assault along the west and west central Korean fronts as Chinese Communist units pulled back. A tank infantry thrust struck deep green lines near Kumhwa, with one clash killing about 50 enemy soldiers. Lt Gen. Van Fleet, inspecting the front, praised the Eighth Army and noted a self propelled Long Tom artillery battalion arriving from Arkansas.
DETROIT April 17 Two policemen asked why Herbert Gray 34 was feeding nickels to a parking meter. He said he removed the red flag and wanted to raise the American flag. Judge W McKay Skillman fined him 5 dollars for being drunk.
A man charged with burglary here will be questioned in connection with the July 1948 gunshot death of a Parker County farmer. He is identified as Robert West 36 of El Paso, alias Julian Dixon. Texas Ranger George Roach said Dixon will be questioned about Eugene Miller who was shot at his Garner community farm home near Weatherford. The motive is unknown but robbery is ruled out. Dixon is charged as West in a hotel burglary with Clifford Serum from South Bend Indiana. The hotel room belonged to C. C. Simonson of Argusville NC. a watch and about 21 dollars were taken. They were arrested at Shamrock and jailed in Potter County on 1000 dollar bonds.
Postmaster Gordon Jordan favors establishing a South Amarillo post office station west of Polk Street between Twenty-fourth and the Canyon Highway. Idan notes petitions for a survey to gauge need, easing main office congestion but adding costs for quarters utilities and staff. Jordan says no assurance yet, though he would like the station set up.
Washington April 17 A Senate Banking Committee order announced an investigation into whether Congress members have peddled influence with the RFC. Maj. James A. Richards, veteran provost marshal, leads Amarillo Air Force Base AP operations. The Air Police replace the old Military Police in a streamlined uniform and new name AP, with Richards in charge of police work and squadron command. He previously served as provost marshal at Sheppard, Fort Logan, and March Air Force Bases.
Scantily clad roomers fled to safety as a $20,000 blaze tore through the Nichol son Hotel at 200 Harrison. Amarillo attorney Tom Seay valued damage at $26,000. The entire upper story burned. water damage hit the first floor. Fire Chief Roy Hill said flames rose 30 feet and crews fought for three hours. The Watley Recreation Club at 202 Harrison suffered slight damage as wind pushed the fire toward the street. Four fire trucks responded. The hotel for Negroes is run by Mrs Mollie Nicholson and leased to Seay for 25 years.
Lt Gen Matthew B Ridgway arrived in Tokyo and moved into the American embassy general MacArthur's former home, signaling a shift in postwar duties and leadership.
